Bituaya – ElectroCaribe (Review)

Bituaya

ElectroCaribe

Straight from Caracas the capital of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, electro-Caribbean Latin hip-hop outfit Bituaya is quickly becoming an act to follow. With a mixture of danceable rhythms, head-nodding beats, and liberating energy, their live performance and their new record ElectroCaribe is a multilayered medley of Latin American music history, socially conscious lyricism, positive thought and excitement—all in a familiar and aesthetically pleasing package speaking to a hip-hop and electronic sensibility.  Their live performance, which I will briefly discuss, is one of the more lively and intimate shows ...

Manifest Equality Gallery Opening – 3.3.10 (Los Angeles)

The people of Rome in the 4th century didn’t think anything about the forests of Germany until the Goths smashed down their …

Becoming Obama: Roker Diatribe

Obama Please, Part Deux (Raymond Leon Roker)

Days before the Iowa caucus, I sat at this keyboard and, with the fullest of convictions, wrote that I didn’t believe America was ready to elect a Black president [see "Obama Please," Issue #151]. At that point, 2007 had been a sharp reminder of how far apart we we can be at times. I had recently watched YouTube clips of the congressional rap hearings (yeah, read that again: "Congressional Rap Hearings"). This farce unfolded on C-SPAN just below the cultural radar and mocked everything we stand for at this magazine (even though David Banner and even Master P deflected the Senatorial hypocrisy wonderfully, maybe as a prelude of what is yet to come). At the same time, opinions were divided as to whether Imus got his license to ill …
