The Shaky Hands – Allison and the Ancient Eye (MP3)

There’s something vaguely Neil Young-ish about all of this. It might be the scraggly hair that doffs each dude’s head in the Shaky Hands. But regardless of what all involved appear outwardly, this tightly wound track – “Allison and the Ancient Eyes” – from the upcoming Let It Die, makes good on the vague promises that last year’s Lunglight presented. This isn’t gonna get these guys opening for Bad Religion who opens for Pearl Jam (?!?), but there’s unquestionably still places for this Portland band to take its music.

Let It Die hits shelves Sep 29 via Kill Rock Stars.

The Tipping Point :: Comeback Season

Welcome to The Tipping Point, URB.com’s new monthly hip-hop column. What exactly is The Tipping Point, you ask? In 2000, author Malcolm Gladwell published The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference. In the book Gladwell detailed puzzling sociological changes that mark everyday life. Tipping points, he wrote, are “the levels at which the momentum for change becomes unstoppable.” Today, Gladwell’s dictum applies more than ever to hip-hop. Though the culture has always been in transition—really, it has never stopped evolving—I believe rap, in all its dot com and digital single glory, is at a musical boiling point; a point in which any one rapper, any one single, or any one album can completely change the current state of affairs (what up Drake!). But, to be clear, The Tipping Point isn’t just about …

Kanye Angers Thousands at Bonnaroo Festival

Hip-hop super star Kanye West managed to piss off a crowd of thousands at the Bonnaroo Festival this past weekend by missing his scheduled performance time of 2:45am by 2 hours. Before he hit the stage at roughly 4:30am, the crowd was throwing glow sticks and chanting “Kanye sucks!” The delay was result of West’s stage set up, involving a space theme with many props. However, part of the delay was also caused by taking down the set of the musical act before Kanye…none other than Pearl Jam. Angry fans did not know this, but it made no difference as many went back into their tents while Kanye’s act bled into sunrise. In this case, for Kanye, it was harder, better, slower, stronger. You can read more about it on the NY Times.

Avalon vs. A Million Hipsters

Last night at Snitch, things got hectic. Over-capacity is an understatement when describing the amount of bodies shoved into that sardine can of a rock club. The place is pretty cool, but it should have a lot less people in it, who would feel ever more exclusive with a tiny bit more breathing room. Heck, they could actually enjoy the various chicks taking turn to slide up and down the stripper pole convenientally located near the stage.

First things first.

Opening band, The Dirty Pearls…can’t say they were worth the ear-drum damage. To put it another way, they’d probably fit in well with the monday night line-up at LA’s the Viper Room….to put it yet another way:

Moving on…people don’t …
