Autechre – Move Of Ten (Review)

Warp mainstays and acclaimed electronic duo Autechre, known for their eccentric sonic experiments, are back at it with their second album of 2010. Their full-length album, Oversteps, was released in February, and Move Of Ten picks up right where it left off. Move Of Ten could technically be classified as an EP, but it’s just as well-compiled as a full album (although it is short at just eight songs). That said, the songs here are every bit as advanced and freewheeling as Autechre’s past work.

Autechre – Oversteps (Review)

Autechre

Oversteps

Released by Warp

The steady transmogrification that has marked Autechre’s career up to this point continues with the release of Oversteps. Marking the 10th official LP from the duo of Sean Booth and Rob Brown, this collection of songs often abandons overt rhythms and conventional percussion, and instead leans on keen construction of unsettled sounds carefully balanced into combined presences. The arrangements hang in spaces of their own definition, each track making and breaking its own new set of rules. The approach seems as intently focused on the precise attributes of the chosen sounds as well as how those sounds are wielded. Brittle shards of electronic crystals, ringing panes of translucent metal and soulful robotic chirps are put to work to create otherworldly harmonies of songs with typical Autechre titles such as “ Known(1),” “See On See,” a “0=0,” "krYlon,” and “Redfall.”

Autechre 12-Hour Mix Download and Setlist (MP3)

For those who couldn’t blow off an entire day this week to listen to the live stream of Autechre’s 12-hour mix session, the whole set is available for download at Percussionlab, and a legally-questionable file transfer site near you. More impressive is the almost complete set list that was quickly created via the hive mind of global trainspotters. There’s still a few “unknowns” on the doc, so test your ID abilities.

Of course, Autechre gave us this music gift in exchange for talking about this new album, Oversteps, which arrives on Warp Records March 23rd. So there ya go.

Autechre Mix Tape

Sonically unwrapping an Autechre album is a delicate, overwhelming and sometimes unnerving process — so why should an Ae mixtape be any different?

In anticipation of their March 2010 album, Oversteps, the duo of Rob Brown and Sean Booth have released a DJ mix for Fact Magazine. “No tracklist either, so spotters, please do you worst.”

Alright, I did.

Covered in manipulated, over-and-under-saturated, tempo-nudging production, MC’s such as Sensational, Guilty Simpson, Ultramagnetic MC’s, Q-Tip and Percee P meet undulating electro, early ’90s breaks, a reworking of Meat Beat Manifesto’s “Radio Babylon” , throbbing squelch ‘n’ bass and a gamut of plug-in tweaks; that is, subjecting the majority of the tracks to the same unraveling processes that make Ae’s oeuvre so distinct.

Note: may contain traces of new Autechre works (pay attention after the extended cut and paste Black Metal segment).

Hurry, …
