Dub Leaves the Bedroom: Jah Division and Awesome Color Live in Brooklyn, NY

“It started with the name,” said Jah Division drummer Chris Millstein, from the back room at Glasslands in Brooklyn, NY, secret herbs and spices in the air. This origin might indicate a gimmick and definitely a joke suited for High Fidelity. But Jah Division, a reggae inspired pun on Joy Division, manifested into something cultish and real over the past few years, much to the band’s surprise. Particularly, it’s always new when eager audiences show up and space out.

Patti Smith Iceland

Last night, Patti Smith got psychedelic on the Santa Monica pier. Early in the set, an extended (at least 10 minutes) “Are You Experienced,” replete with Patti on clarinet solos, with the way she makes everything all gutsy and introspective while sensually keeping time with her pelvis, as the sun bent over behind the ferris wheel…was otherworldly at the very least. The avant-basement rendition of “White Rabbit” got off well with a story about looking up at a palm tree, holding up her hands side by side, thinking it kind of made sense to call it a palm tree, when suddenly Grace Slick appeared to her and said, “Nice Tree.” The propulsive beat began behind her and Patti, amused by her own fairy tale, kept missing the beginning note as she grooved to the song.
