Dirty Projectors @ Troubadour 7/8/09 (Review)

It’s ok if you would like to bathe in Dave Longstreth’s sweat. The sold out Dirty Projectors show last night at The Troubadour in L.A. made it clear that this art-rock powerhouse deserves every ounce of praise they garner. Between Longstreth’s innate songwriting talent and a kaleidoscopic sound palette exists the touchstone of what an indie band ought to be.

Angel Deradoorian launched the set with “Two Doves” off of the group’s latest release, Bitte Orca. It was a stunning musical meditation with a flawless delivery.

Conquering the map, critics, and fans could have an ego-boosting effect on any band, but how unassuming they all looked in nondescript clothes. Longstreth eagerly performed masterpiece after masterpiece as if holding out on the audience for another second would loose the magic; his gifts come from …

Cinderella with Sticks – A New Drum Off Champion Is Crowned

Los Angeles was grooving to the beat of many different drummers Saturday. The Guitar Center Drum Off Championships brought out hundreds of young hopefuls, six finalists and a slew of celebrity judges.

The Henry Fonda was filled with all ages eager to hit the skins, including some barely old enough to read…

Luckily there were free drum kits set up all over the lobby for anyone wishing to take their metered aggression out in a musical manner.
I played drums briefly when I was twelve. Somehow, I was put behind the kit in music class and then graduated to stage band as a chick drummer. Of course, that lasted only a few weeks until my …

Dirty Mac ft. John Lennon, Eric Claption, Keith Richards and Mitch Mitchell (Video)

I went through a pretty hefty Beatles phase at the end of middle school. Probably the first band I ever obsessed over—a habit that would lead me to blogging on URB.com two decades later. But how is it possible that this never came onto my radar!? Dirty Mac was a one off group consisting of John Lennon on vocals and guitar, Eric Clapton on lead guitar, Keith Richards on bass, and Mitch Mitchell on drums. Here, they perform The Beatles “Yer Blues,” one of my fave songs from the White Album. Thanks to the recent BBC program A-Z of Erol Alkan for unveiling this amazing momement to me.

Interview with NYC’s FIGO

FIGO has been bangin’ out unique combinations of electro and rock for some time now up in the Big Apple. URB got a chance to catch up with them before their big week with the CMJ festival.

URB: Not many groups can say they are electro-rock. Where did the inspiration come to make electronic music fused with analog-inspiration like Iggy and the Stooges, Misfits, etc.?

FIGO: The electro-rock sound for us just grew naturally. When we started, FIGO was a three piece – Bob on guitar, Paul on bass, Parag on drums and vocals. We always knew we wanted to get the sound more electronic, we didn’t know exactly how to do it, but we still wanted to keep the harder, live band sound as well. When Ryan joined the band he would produce …

Fink continues to excel with new sound

Fink is certainly not the first artist to move from making hip hop and electronic beats to a more traditional rock approach, but while results from the likes of RJD2, Money Mark and Everlast haven’t always been on par with their previous work, Fin Greenall, as he’s known to family and friends, gets it exactly right.

The rhythmic acoustic blues he’s making these days is powerful stuff and Distance and Time, his latest album for Ninja Tune, is a memorably forceful break up chronicle. Recently in Chicago on the tail end of a US tour with the band he also calls Fink, Greenall and company played to a much larger crowd at Schuba’s than during their free show a year back at Empty Bottle.

Backed by Guy Whittaker on bass and Tim Thornton on drums, Greenall performed …
