URB Spotlight: Six of New York City’s Best Studio Engineers [Exclusive Interview]

To quote my homie Chico Mann, “Sound Is Everything” and, in my opinion, has everything to do with music. It’s been years since I’ve listened to music through an iPod, preferring to feel the pulse of the beat whether speaker freaking or writhing in my seat in front of a pair of bottom heavy monitors.

And while I could go on for a hot minute expressing my disdain for Steve Jobs and the decline of quality sound leading to the popularity of a compressed mess, I’d rather tout the praises of URB’s six best engineers in New York City. These are the people who pronounce the bounce. And their work graces the grooves of the world’s best records, from Madonna to A-Trak, Busta Rhymes to Oakenfold and tons in-between. These engineers have devoted their time to help up-and-coming producers achieve new levels of success. And as home based and portable production techniques try to rule the music scene — with more and more music producers doing everything from mixing and mastering all by themselves — I offer you a peek inside the minds of these forward thinking sonic soldiers…

NYC // TOMORROW – W Hotels & Boiler Room Present: Do Not Disturb 003 (Video)

Boiler Room NY has been on quite a roll recently; with a couple of invigorating broadcasts that featured the likes of headliners such as Nicolas Jaar and Frankie Knuckles, there was only one direction to go, which was up. Enter “Do Not Disturb” a collaborative brainchild of Boiler Room and W Hotels Worldwide, where underground music streaming bonanza meets a suite at The W. The combination usually brought upon a massive party that blurred lines between genres and made all the party people jump with joy. The New York edition is sure to do the same with a lineup that’s exciting as much as it is eclectic, going from alternative R&B darlings (Solange), to NYC heavyweight hip-hop kings (Pete Rock, Cam’ron), all the way to one of the kings of house music (Kenny Dope). Let’s also not forget Brooklyn-via-Chicago bass aficionado Brenmar will be going back-to-back with A$AP DJs, and Halifax’s favorite son, Ryan Hemsworth will also be at the proceedings, providing heat. Check out some antics from the London showcase at The W, featuring JETS down below.

DOIN’ IT IN THE PARK: A Documentary by Bobbito Garcia & Kevin Couliau (Video)

DOIN’ IT IN THE PARK: PICK-UP BASKETBALL, NYC” explores the history, culture and social impact of New York’s summer “b-ball” scene, also known as “pick-up ball” and “playground basketball.”

Co-directors Bobbito Garcia and Kevin Couliau visited 180 courts throughout NYC’s five boroughs—within 75 hot summer days—to create their debut documentary. The filmmakers traveled to a majority of the locations by bicycle, carrying cameras and a ball in their backpacks. The film’s title refers as much to the subject matter as it does to the method of filmmaking, providing an unprecedented perspective on America’s most popular, and accessible, free recreation, which has influenced an international lifestyle.

In New York City, pick-up is not just a sport. It is a way of life. There are 700+ outdoor courts, and an estimated 500,000 players, the most loyal of which approach the game as a religion, and the playground as their church.

DOIN’ IT IN THE PARK” lovingly uncovers this movement through the voices of playground legends, NBA athletes, and most importantly the common man and woman, including those incarcerated and handicapped, who loyally look forward to experiencing the raw energy of the game at their local outdoor court.

“You can play high school or college for four years. You can play Pro for a decade. You can play pick-up… for life.”

Screening info and trailer after the jump.

Autopilot 008: Aquarian & Divvorce Take Over Sullivan Room in NYC – TOMORROW (MP3)

This Thursday, the late-night ceremonies at Sullivan Room will be focused on the darker spectrum of bass and techno fury, courtesy of the Autopilot series of events that have been going on for some time now. While delving into house and bass in previous Autopilot sessions, this one promises a more head-on approach, by highlighting two heavy-hitting new kids on the Brooklyn block. We start off with Brookyln-via-Toronto bass specialist Aquarian, as he’s riding high off his tremendous debut EP on UNO as well as sharing remix duties with techno godfather Juan Atkins for Rone, which will be coming out in a couple of weeks on French label Infiné. On the other side of the bill is the just-brandished bass and techno fury of Divvorce, who runs the ever-growing and impressively fastidious Fifth Wall label with fellow producer Hound Scales. His latest release, Used Experience has come out to acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork and XLR8R and has gotten people to remember the feeling of a fist-pump and a good sweat. That’s good, considering the combination of these two producers playing together should be nothing short of fist-pumpingly brilliant and sweat-inducing. Rounding off the night will be local techno masked-man Sheepshead and resident of Autopilot (and one half of the End Fence label), Your Move.  Check out all the details on their Facebook event HERE, as well as a way to get entry free (with RSVP). Also, feel free to vibe down below of what’s to come when you switch to Autopilot tomorrow night.
