A celebration dedicated to too many people to mention both living and resting (R.I.P. Guru), DJ Premier and the Beat Junkies (including DJ Rhettmatic and DJ Babu) absolutely obliterated hip-hop at the Echoplex on Saturday only to reconstruct it via expertly crafted golden age-inspired sets. Babu and Rhettmatic made their way through the likes of James Brown, Dead Prez, …
How many times have you been listening to a rap record and heard a reference that seemed all too familiar but you couldn’t quite place? That’s the concept behind Check Ya Footnotes, the meticulously-researched new mixtape from DJ Raize and Sunny Day Entertainment. The interconnected realms of classic hip hop are delved into via tracks from artists such as A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang, Mos Def and Notorious B.I.G.
Prince Zimboo, pictured above in full royal regalia and incongruously holding a small plastic crocodile, is fast becoming known to many as the ‘African Borat’ and has the vocal stylings to match, but it’s his witty wordplay and downright hilarious raps that have had him quickly garnering attention from keen ears across the interweb and teaming up with MIA and Major Lazer.
Here he gets “Zimboouicy” on a cover of Biggie’s “Juicy” that will have the purists crying ‘Sacrilege!’ and the rest of us wondering if this really isn’t just Weird Al Yankovic territory but with better branding. Still, it’s bagloads of fun.
Attention DJs: dropping this immediately after playing the first verse of the original “Juicy” will have heads on the floor smiling and nodding at your impeccably-sourced, irony-laden dy-na-MITE! choice of dance material. You’re …
The always oh so fabulous New York Times reported that we’ll all be looking like Elaine from Seinfeld this upcoming fall. Not only are they pretty much spot on about past trends from the Spring ready to wear shows but Alexander Wang I suspect secretly gets his inspiration from The Baby-Sitters Club Movie. It’s also no surprise that music itself has gotten a bit 1990’s itself.
Last week, DJ Babu came up to visit DJ Tony Touch. After reminiscing over a trip to Amsterdam with Toca, Babu took over the 1s and 2s to let go some exclusives. In the set, you’ll hear music from MF Doom and Sean Price, Fashawn, Evidence, Dilated Peoples, and more.
Make sure to tune in to the show tonight. The legendary DJ Enuff will be doing a special Notorious B.I.G. set to pay respect to the late GREAT rapper. Also, Nickelus F is coming up to the show to debut the first leak off his upcoming mixtape The Season Premiere entitled Shine On featuring XV. Tune in to Toca Tuesdays each and every Tuesday from 8pm – 12am on Shade 45/XM 66.
