FYF Fest 2011: The Recap

Already in its 8th installment, the redundantly named FYF (Fuck Yeah Fest) Fest made for a great day in beautiful sunny L.A. of music, comedy and fun. Taking most attendants away of the hustle and bustle of the city and the workweek, L.A’s Historic Park became the getaway site to celebrate this year’s Labor Day weekend. This year line-up featured performers like Four Tet, No Age, The Olivia Tremor Control, Glass Candy, Girls, YACHT, URB favorite and L.A. native Nosaj Thing, Explosions in the Sky, Simian Mobile Disco, and the now-considered dance-punk classics, Death From Above 1979. With others like the Descendants, Guided By Voices, Broken Social Scene, Dan Deacon, Cold War Kids, Smith Westerns, The Weakerthans, Cults, and many more, the festival offered up a variety of talent to satisfy everyone’s tastes.

URB Exclusive: Malachai, “Let ‘Em Fall (Nosaj Thing remix)” (MP3)

So you know like the first time I listened to “Poker Face” by Lady Gaga – at a Halloween party I ended up DJing at – I foo-fooed the ipod away from my face as if someone had offered me some plate of cheese or something. The thing is that later on I really liked it! Now when I first listened to Malachai I was like, “what is this?” So then after googling and finding out about the larger European following I began to understand more and more. Nosaj Thing has remixed “Let ‘Em Fall” and you’re probably going to have the same reaction but it’s ok! We’re in this together, and you know this song is infectious. I’m sure later on you’ll be singing the …

Jamie XX To Produce Next Drake Album

The crossover between indie artist and hip-hop acts isn’t exactly new (think Kid Cudi on Letterman backed by Ratatat, or Bon Ivers performing back-up vocals for Kanye). But this raised our eyebrows. Rap star Drake has told BBC Radio 1 that he is working with Jamie XX on his second full-length, Take Care. …MORE

Nosaj Thing & Toro y Moi @ Music Hall of Williamsburg (Live Review)

Another cold and brisk night in New York City, I made my trek last Friday to Williamsburg to catch Nosaj Thing on his tour debuting his new A/V show, courtesy of Mean Red Productions.   On the bill were some impressive acts such as Mary Anne Hobbs, Dirty South Joe and Toro y Moi but for me, the main attraction was Nosaj Thing and his visual show that I’ve been anticipating since I first laid my eyes on his performance in Amsterdam.

Dark Disco In Brooklyn with Mary Anne Hobbs, Nosaj Thing + More

MeanRed is back with another devious dose of their darkside endeavor, Dark Disco. This time, it’s housed in the venue of Brooklyn’s own Music Hall of Williamsburg, with a lineup that’s undoubtedly impressive and immersive. The night will feature DJ sets from (now) post-chillwave act Toro y Moi, “lovestep” extraordinaire Dirty South Joe, and URB favourite Mary Anne Hobbs. What’s most intriguing is that L.A.’s abstract beatmaking sensation, Nosaj Thing, will be performing live a bit differently. Nosaj will be doing an impressive (and rarely done) full A/V set, with a focus on magnifying the live experience of Nosaj Thing (which is already fantastic). Details on where to get tickets and the flyer with info on tonight’s festivities after the jump.
