Red Bull Thre3style Heat 4 Recap and Thoughts (Video)

With the end of the world finals looming in the horizon, the contestants for heat 4, were definitely in a league of their own.  Bearing witness to the three previous heats, it was noticeable that the 5 remaining DJs were working to make sure that the judges and crowd were left in a heap of sweat and their ears begging for more.

The international suspects for the night included SUPA! from France and the previous year’s winners protege, DJ Byte hailing from Chile, Peru’s Thomas Young, DJ Spell from New Zealand, and the US champ, Big Once.  Despite strong showings for the night, the crowd made it no secret who their favorites were — France’s SUPA! and the United States’ Big Once.

ZOWIE Releases Teaser Video! (Video & MP3)

This just in from our friends at FILTER:

We’re not sure what else is to come from New Zealand-based artist ZOWIE… but we like what we hear so far with this futuristic teaser for “Love Demolition”. With beats reminiscent of The Knife.. on a not-so-dark day, and a hint of 80’s synths, it’s a right catchy tune. At only 22, she has already opened for The Kills and Peaches and has performed at The Big Day Out and Rhythm and Vines. We would like to be teased a bit more to see what Miss ZOWIE has to offer.

Julien Dyne – Pins & Digits (Review)

Julien Dyne

Pins & Digits

Released by BBE

Julien Dyne is a drummer from New Zealand who has worked with artists like Fat Freddys Drop and Nathan Haines. He has also been involved with Red Bull Music Academy. He brings a range of styles to Pins & Digits; it has a cosmic club vibe with Dyne's percussion, rich brass, Rhodes, bass, vibes and electronics. Pins and Digits features guests spots from some of New Zealand’s most talented musicians including the vocal talents of Mara TK (Electric Wire Hustle). He is a  musician who can play organic funk, jazz and soul, and rock a MPC and an array of analog synths. On Pins & Digits he tries to find a balance between these styles: club grooves with an eclectic range of percussion, programming and synth, and down tempo compositions. The big bass, brass and futuristic keyboard sounds are pleasant to your ears, but all this eclecticism also makes it sound a little dated, as if he’s borrowing too much from others. You can easily hear Dilla, Spacek and Flying Lotus lurking in the shadows.

Flying Nun and the Art of Recovery

Roger Shepherd, after 18 years of having a hand in running the label, sold his bid in the company back in ’99. But after the imprint changed hands a few times, the label’s founder has again claimed a stake in the operations of Flying Nun. Boss.
