Drake x Complex Video

You know you’re a star when people offer you their puppies or a girl is having a very audible conniption fit. Congrats. This behind the scenes video of Drake’s “legendary” cover of the upcoming Feb/March issue of Complex is a uproariously funny (hard to count the number of girls buggin’ out) and the only calm person is Drake himself. I know we like to knock him, but his bravado is part of his charm and it sounds like he actually has a good head on his shoulders.

A little excerpt::

You feel like you’re at the finish line?

Drake: I’m at the starting line. Those guys are at home, putting on their tracksuits, getting ready to make their attack. When J. Cole gets it super-right, I think he’s gonna have a place as a Nas-type …

DJ Boo – Recycled Beats (Review)

DJ Boo

Recycled Beats

Released by Self-Released

The DJ mix is always a question of identity: Who is the DJ? And what are they trying to prove? Not that they're all so self-conscious, but the mix always asserts something. On The Block is Hot, Pt 2 Blockhead asserted his indvidualism over moody samples from Everlast and Rakim. On Bumps Controller 7 illustrated a knowing reverence for the Golden Age, smooshing De La against Nas and making both sound newly relevant. I've heard James Murphy treat a DJ mix as a sketchbook, Greg Gillis treat it as a urinal, Primo as another excuse to scratch a bunch. I've heard DJ Shadow do pretty much everything a two-armed human can do on a DJ mix. He was clearly proving something.

Fashawn-”Memory Lane” (MP3)

Fashawn doesn’t have much to prove when it comes to mic skills. But he took a huge leap when he decided to hop on this classic DJ Premier beat off of Illmatic. Some of you may frown on his take on the song considering it’s one of the best tracks from Nas’s magnum opus. I think he did an admirable job although he played Nas’s flow on it too closely. I’m sure that was his intention. With that said I would’ve loved to hear him make the song his own as he’s capable of doing so. Anyway, it’s a solid effort for the Fresno MC so it’s worth taking a look.

We Need More Fashawn – Less Drake (Video)

Fresno, CA rapper Fashawn’s solo debut, Boy Meets World, dropped a day after his 21st birthday. He already had several mixtapes under his belt, toured Europe and appeared on tracks with super producer The Alchemist (who produced Fashawn’s latest mixtape, The Antidote). A fatherless group home kid with a drug addict mother, he could have easily been led astray. Instead, Fashawn tempers his gritty lyrics with uplifting and hopeful messages.
