To kickoff the Celebrate Brooklyn! series, The Roots are playing Prospect Park bandshell in Brooklyn this week! Supported by My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James, whose recent performance on Jimmy Fallon in support of the new “Regions of Light and Sound of God” LP was worthy of a full concert-length collaboration. For your chance to win free tickets to the show, just email your name to firstname.lastname@example.org with “Celebrate Brooklyn!” as the subject. For those of you who live in New York and don’t win tickets to the show tuesday, they are still available via Ticketmaster.
After standard train delays, I arrived at Webster Hall 45 minutes late and missed all of Canadian ‘doom soul’ artist (and recent Juno award nominee) Cold Specks’ opening set. From what I gather, she killed it.
Jim James and his touring cohorts took the stage with atmospheric Middle Eastern sounds ringing in the air. With a bow from the big name on the marquee, a spectacular set comprised of James’ solo debut, Regions of Light and Sound of God, began under the restrained kinetic energy of “State of the Art.” The song deals with our growing disconnect as modern technologies foster the illusion of unity. James speaks of “a life worth living” divorced from a sea of restless faces buried in screens, logging their every journey outside the house on Foursquare and projecting images of a high quality existence. …MORE

Bonnaroo’s climate change awareness album, Best of Bonnaroo, will feature live recordings of Wilco, Pearl Jam and My Morning Jacket, The Decemberists and Jack Johnson.
The plan is to get the free compilation out to people who will then email their Senators, Obama and local media to stand in favor of upcoming climate change legislation. The project is a collaboration between the festival, HeadCount and NRDC Action Fund. The free download is available at Music for Action, where you can also get involved. Tracklisting after the jump.
This Memorial Day the annual Sasquatch! Festival will takeover the Gorge in Quincy, Washington with Massive Attack, My Morning Jacket and Pavement headlining. As per usual, the lineup sticks with the indie-rock vibe. Expect dirtier-than-usual hipsters but there’s not much better than catching the scene’s fresh darlings (Local Natives) alongside the established (Broken Social Scene) and the fan favorites (Vampire Weekend, The xx) in that woodsy setting. Full lineup and info after the jump.
