Lateef the Truthspeaker :: Interview

Hailing from the West Coast’s Quannum Projects (home to DJ Shadow, Blackalicious, Tommy Guerrero, etc.) Lateef The Truthspeaker is a longtime MC with deep histories that precede him.  As half of Latyrx (with Lyrics Born), half of Mighty Underdogs (with Gift Of Gab), and half of The Maroons (with Chief Xcel), there hasn’t been a shortage of work from the Oakland native.  What is noteworthy is that, after all these years, all the tours, all the revered tracks, and a Grammy to boot, Lateef finally debuted with a long-awaited solo album, Firewire.

“I’m very happy with it,” he says of the new album.  “I always try to keep busy but it was nice to finally focus on just my own songs.”  Lateef’s focus has been what’s driven him and his crew since they were college-aged kids in the early ‘90s, known as the Solesides collective.  It’s this early work that catapulted their subsequent careers, a body of work that ranks amongst the best the West has ever offered.  And while “Lateef” translates as “gentle” in Arabic, Lateef the Truthspeaker is a vicious MC with a catalogue that precedes him.  Here, we talk with this son of Black Panthers about work ahead in both political and musical realms, touching on some history, the time he battled Murs, the forming of Latyrx, old recordings and of course anticipated new ones.

Murs Exclusive Interview

Respected MC Murs built his name and reputation on bringing his unique brand of truth and creativity to hip-hop. Murs emphasizes that this album’s theme is about the “balance of yin and yang” and that his goal was “to make something, positive, powerful, and inspiring.” Whether it is through touring, his music, or his annual Paid Dues Festival, Murs works hard to create the music that his fans expect while not being afraid to show his evolution as a man. …MORE

The LAST @a3c article: 18 top acts that smashed and The Most Honorable Mentions..EVER (Video & MP3)

A3C was a weekend filled with reunions, representing, and rapping. Crews rapping acts like Jon Connor with their “ya knooooow!” chants and acts like the LEP Bogus Boys from Chicago with their crazy showcase at Fadia Kader’s Perfect Attendance Stage.

Artists flew from all over the country to make noise and shake hands. Acts like Prime Element did the same as MC Pig Pen and Pat Maine last year by driving from Colorado to make it happen for themselves in the sake of hip hop. Out of 200 plus performances, …

Murs :: “316 Ways” (Prod. by Ski Beatz) (Video)

Murs has a new collaboration album out with producer Ski Beatz, Love & Rockets Vol. 1: The Transformation. The first video show the LA-based rapper showing off his recently shorn dreads on the streets of NYC and in a basement boxing gym. Not the most original metaphor out there, but much like Murs’ always fierce delivery and Ski Beatz’s boom-bap and soul-sample sound, there’s always room for more of the good stuff.
