Oh No Ono “Eleanor Speaks” (Caribou Remix) (MP3)

Progressive remix for the progressive psychedelic in us all.

It has always been my personal belief that psychedelia could use a little help from the bass and dance arena. Canada’s electronic musician Daniel Sniath, also known as Caribou, felt like adding exactly that to one of the singles off of Oh No Ono’s most recent albums.

Danish quintet, Oh No Ono and their latest release, Eggs is full of psychedelic synths and balanced harmonies. But Caribou wanted to take the song to a whole other level.

Caribou starts out “Eleanor Speaks” as an even more psychedelic track, layered it with echoing keys and turns into a big, fat dance track reminding me of the good ole’ progressive house days (complete with high hats). There’s nothing like a tribal house beat to make psychedelia sound even more progressive.

Black Man’s Cry: The Inspiration of Fela Kuti (Review)

Various Artists

Black Man's Cry: The Inspiration of Fela Kuti

Released by Now-Again Records

To begin describing the epic importance of Fela Kuti is to write a doctoral thesis on the history of African music from before his birth to the present day. To understand the impact the music of a person such as Fela is to consider the history of struggle, prejudice, racism, and political disenfranchisement as an understandable whole.  In the music of Fela Kuti, we see these positive undercurrents of political awakening, consciousness, activism, empowerment and liberation.  These values are what make the messages embedded in the work of Fela ...

WHY? – “These Hands (Son Lux Remix)” (MP3)

Fresh off the release of the Weapons EP, critically-acclaimed Son Lux is the latest producer to try his hand at remixing WHY?’s Eskimo Snow. His take on “These Hands” begins with a piercing drone that shifts to a minimalist composition as the lyrics hit before building to a dramatic finale. The track gives the listener a brief yet intriguing glimpse of the chant-driven, atmospheric soundscapes Son Lux has become known for. It maintains the emotion of the original song while adding its own pensive elements.

TreaZon – Breathe Life 2 (MP3)

This guy right here – in a few years – is gonna be someone to talk about.

TreaZon’s still rather young and while that doesn’t usually come across in his lyrics, some of the less focused work represented on Breathe Life 2 points to the fact.

While some of the production is scatter-shot and some of the raps even seem to be under-developed, tracks like “Outside Looking In,” which clocks in at a bit over five minutes, amply displays this emcee’s talent. Hopefully folks in his hometown and across the country open up those ear holes and take note.
