Much like Tom Waits before them, the indie rap collective better known as Fake Four, Inc. is big in Japan. When disaster struck recently in the form of earthquake, tsunami and nuclear devastation, Japanese emcee Kaigen reached out to the Connecticut-based label to help in the relief effort. The result is a four track EP featuring impassioned narratives and beats from the likes of Sole, Myka9, Ceschi, Awol One, Moka Only, Factor, Jared Paul, Radical Face, Leif Kolt, Gregory Pepper and greencarpetedstairs. Eight bucks gets you the J-A-P-A-N EP with all proceeds benefiting Relief International’s efforts to help survivors in Japan. Great music for a great cause.
Common Grackle
The Great Depression
Released by Fake Four Inc.
Gregory Pepper writes quirky songs centered on human suffering with frayed edges of humor and wit. “The Great Depression” and “Big Marquee” are beautifully-composed odes to sorrow with clever one-liners like “I used to pull pins out of hand grenades / then I extracted lemons out of lemonade” on full display. Clocking in at just over 31 minutes, Canadian duo Common Grackle’s The Great Depression is a concise, cynical meditation on melancholy. It’s a heavy record, but not without moments of comedic relief such as “At The Grindcore Show.” Pepper uses the track to play weary sociological observer as he croons “They all look like body doubles from that shitty film The Crow / now I don’t wanna die at the grindcore show.”
Ron Contour & Factor
Saffron
Released by Fake Four Inc.
There's a fine line between quirky and weird for the sake of weird. Ron Contour, the artist better known as Moka Only, has some of the strangest lyrics in modern hip-hop. Those familiar with his eccentric solo work and collaborations with Swollen Members will not be remotely surprised at the content found within Saffron. The casual listener, however, is left wondering what's up with all the food references. Some of his culinary mentions are witty metaphors. Other times he just wants you to know how much he digs Papa John's.
The overall vibe of Saffron is rife with the playful exuberance of early De La Soul. If you're looking for something more philosophical, this isn't for you. Ron Contour makes summertime BBQ music (e.g. "Glad") with an occasional side dish of melancholy. Bizarre flows about the "type of shit to make a girl fuck a wookie bear" and a "peanut butter cookie monster" keep things interesting for those who can appreciate his absurdism and save the record from mundane food rapdom.
And here’s a track off Random Axe the Sean Price x Guilty Simpson x Black Milk album due next year “Monster Babies.”
Moka Only
Lowdown Suite 2...The box
The Canadian/West Coast Hip Hop Veteran Moka Only provides the world with another disc (his 27th LP), a labor of lyrical love, presented in a box called the Lowdown Suite 2...The Box. Moka Only's lyrics and voicing on the album is rhymensicent of Common circa 1998 and his soulful production is a reminder of the Philly neo soul sound that dominated the airwaves in the late 90's. The sound is soothing yet very hip-hop. There is no doubt that Moka Only spent time combining 'lo-fi sampling, mooding ambiance, ...
