Wale – Back Into Go Mode

It is not very often that an emerging artist is traditional enough to swiftly gain support but unique enough to be in a class of their own. Then again, it takes a special something to land on our 150th issue cover before even having an album out. For people in the know, Wale is far from a “new” artist. Delivering rock-solid mixtapes and now a phenomenal debut album to the masses, this D.C. champion has been someone to pay attention to for a while now. We caught up with the URB favorite to talk Attention Deficit, touring with Jay-Z and Africa.

URB: First and foremost, the album is very very good. You should be very proud…

Wale: Thank you so much man. I appreciate it.

Yeah, it’s great. I mean, I’ve been a fan of you since the 100 Miles and Runnin’ mixtape. …

The illegitimate inherency of the street tape game has created nearly laughable art, from bad photocopying to even worse photoshopping. However, these four artists–who’ve cut their teeth creating slim case art for the greatest DJs out–prove quite brightly that mixtape masterpieces are in the midst of a renaissance.

Def tone Design: The Warrior
Visions of struggle and strife dominate complicated compositions

URB: Where does mixtape art stand at the end of 2007?
Def tone: I think it’s healthy. Over the past …

Roxy Cottontail: Foxy Moxy (Video)

Roxy Cottontail takes the triple crown on the party rap scene

By Joshua Glazer

As a promoter, Roxy Cottontail may be the person most responsible for bringing the B’more-Philly eclectic party sound to New York City. As a DJ, she’s touring the world and winning trophies. Now working to establish herself as a rapper-performer, the blonde bombshell continues to bring the girls and boys baskets full of hipster joy.

URB: You just won the Paper Nightlife award for Best DJ. You’re also an established promoter and an up-and-coming musician. Which is the most important to you?
Roxy Cottontail: I think making music is becoming more of an importance. Ive been recording a lot, but DJing and promoting is kind of paying my bills. So eating is nice, right now.

Eating, DJing, promoting. OK.
I do get paid for performing overseas a lot, so that’s really fun. It’s all important to …
