These days it seems like everyone and their mama is some sort of DJ, but amongst the masses of party rockers, scratch enthusiasts, and bedroom hobbyists there are very few that possess a mastery of their craft.  Enter this evenings Friday Fresh recipient, Jayvi Velasco.

To go along with his status as a bonafide underground legend (Bay Area After-After Hours homies stand up!), Jayvi has held residencies all over California and has shared billings on both over and underground events with folks like Vikter Duplaix, Ron Carroll, Miguel Migs, Mark Farina, Jay-J, Gene Farris, David Harness, Simon, Jeno, and even George Clinton & The P-Funk All Stars.  

Known for a ‘smooth buttery style’ his sessions can almost be seen as lessons in music theory as he has been known to drop …

Friday Fresh 06 – Def Sound – Paisley Sockwear S/S 2013 Soundbook (Download Inside) (MP3)

 

This evening’s edition of Friday Fresh comes to us out of a dope collaboration between Paisley Sockwear and Def Sound, providing us with a double dose of fresh — Music & Style.

The Los Angeles based sockwear brand tapped ‘poet, songwriter, Brownswood Bubbler, designer, and world travelled DJ,’ Def Sound to curate a Soundbook for the Spring/Summer Soundbook.  Pun intended, this brand/DJ collaboration fits like a good pair of socks.  Def Sound’s eclectic artistic style and cross-genre production skills are the perfect match for Paisley Sockwear’s mission statement — ‘that you do not have to sacrifice individuality to be practical.’

Since we are primarily a music publication, we’ll start Friday Fresh with the music portion of this feature.

KAZE’s Out For Presidents To Represent Him.. (MP3)

It’s been sixteen months, to the day Since the Tar Heel veteran emcee KAZE, a/k/a/ 4 Letters, released his Jersey in the Rafters mixtape. Despite some setbacks, the former Loud.com MC contest champ has persevered and continues to craft his hard edged rhymes over top shelf production as he delivers his latest effort, Black Kennedy. The project, which includes 20 new tracks, for over 80 minutes of music, unveils KAZE’s Black Kennedy persona with a slew of guest features, such as Jozeemo, Amanda Barrino, Dasan Ahanu, Johnny Juliano, Wreck N Crew, J. URB Alum, DJ Eko releases Soultronica Vol 3. (MP3)

Hot off the heels of a recent feature on Okay Player, URB Alum, Erica Olsen, otherwise known as DJ Eko has shared her most recent outing– Soultronica Vol 3.

Just what was needed to close out the office night, this mix sent us out floating and into the ether.  Despite the ‘airy-ness’ of the mix, there is a lot going on here, as she has put together a multi-layered effort with her track selection that feels like the ebb and flow of inhaling the world and exhaling art.  While some would dismiss this mix effort as one of the many Valentine’s season mixes that have dropped as of late, there is a penetrating vision displayed here that pushes it over the top of that pile and making it more than just …

Friday Fresh 05 – DJ Bluz – Nu Vibes 002 (MP3)

Now that we’re back to our regularly scheduled Friday Fresh, our spotlight this week is from one of our favorite bi-coastal music heads, DJ Bluz.  Having spent time honing his craft on both coasts, Bluz has garnered a reputation for being one of the most consistent rhythm jockeys around.  His impeccable ear for a dope beat is definitely evident with the mix provided here, as he deftly takes his listener through a journey of tracks that swing through House, NuDisco, Future Beat, and then some.

But again, you don’t have to take our word for it… take a gander for yourself…
