“Remiix” Richie Hawtin’s Minus Label On Your iPhone

Since his early days manipulting records on three turntables with an arsenal of foot pedals to his Decks, EFX & 909 heyday and the salient Closer to the Edit deconstruction of techno, Richie Hawtin has always been searching for a new alchemy with which to transform the traditional techno track into something more.

While the world was preparing for Christmas 2011, Hawtin’s new mobile app publisher Liine unveiled Remiix, an app for iPhone that let’s you “combine, transform and re-arrange” tracks released on his revered Minus label. Download the app for $2.99 on iTunes, and start having your way with cuts by Marc Houle, Matador and Magda (plus a few that don’t start with the letter M).

URB’s Top Picks for Electric Zoo 2011



Made Event’s monster festival on roids, Electric Zoo is back with an extra day and a massive lineup. While last year’s event was fantastic, this year’s lineup looks to overtake the previous incarnation by pouring out a ton of proper acts; sure there will be “stars” like TiĆ«sto, David Guetta and Armin van Buuren, but there will also be our favorites on other, smaller stages. No, they’re not on the Billboard charts or playing stadium tours, but we love them and think they’re DAMN GOOD. With that said, here’s our recommendations on who to check out at the festival.

10 Years of Digital DJing With Richie Hawtin

This month marks the 10 year anniversary of Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva unveiling Final Scratch, the world’s first DVS (Digital Vinyl System), at the MIDEM conference in Paris. Since then, DJing has been completely revolutionized, with laptops replacing record crates and controller replacing turntables for all but the most dedicated vinyl fanatics. Sadly, the changeover seemed to culminate this year with the end of production of Technics 1200 turntables. But what was gained in the process is a DJ world that is infinately more flexible than what existed a decade ago.

We decided to take a look back at the past ten years of digital DJing through the innovations of Richie Hawtin.

Plastikman Archives Preview (Video)

Richie Hawtin has been working overtime doing press to try to sell his return to the Plastikman persona that made him famous in the mid-’90s. But like everythign else in the world of Hawtin, he does it best when he does it on his own, which is why this 10 minute video interview of Hawtin discussing the upcoming Arkives boxset has us more excited (and actually considering dropping the loot) than any of the other promotion we’ve seen. Or maybe we’re just nostalgic because we’re back in the D for the holidays and remeber when half the vintage photos in this clip were taken.
