Miguel Atwood-Ferguson : “Celebrate Tradition” Interview (Video)

Here are some of my shorthand notes based around a conversation I had with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson at his apartment in July 2010.  all of the quotes are not verbatim and are simply some of his thoughts jotted down by me. When I arrived at his home for our interview, the front door was ajar, “It’s actually perfect timing. I’ve been on the phone all day, booking rehearsals.” He admits once I walk inside, “The Prophet” by Kahlil Gibran grabs my eye on top of a stack of books, across from hundreds of CDs neatly lined against the wall. Framed posters of past masters frame the musical instruments in the living room, which has a shrine in the center.

FREE LA Show with the Miguel Atwood-Ferguson Ensemble

On July 23, 2010, multi-intrumentalist/arranger/composer, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson brings his amazing 15 piece ensemble featuring ground-breaking artists Bilal, Flying Lotus, Chris “Daddy” Dave, and Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner to the the Grand Performances concert series at California Plaza in Downtown LA, 350 South Grand Ave..

The ensemble will be doing 2 sets starting at 8pm featuring new Atwood-Ferguson arrangements written for this historic concert.

On the program will be original material from Miguel, Bilal and Flying Lotus as well tributes to J Dilla, Michael Jackson, Guru and Herbie Hancock among other unique offerings all under Miguel’s direction. Do not miss this incredibly special, FREE and once in a lifetime event!

Carlos y Gaby – In The Whirl Emote (MP3)

All City Records continues their wonderful LA 10 x 10″ series, this time featuring Carlos y Gaby and GB (Gifted and Blessed).  The duo of Carlos y Gaby (Carlos Nino and Gaby Hernandez) and GB, highlight’s some of Los Angeles’s best kept secrets.  Carlos Nino is one of LA’s musical driving forces, organizer, producer, arranger, composer, and DJ.  He’s worked with Dwight Trible, seminal jazz group Build an Ark, MC John Robinson, and has released a slew of records via labels such as Ninja Tune, Kindred Spirits, Alpha Pup and others.  He’s also responsible for the Suite for Ma Dukes EP alongside Miguel Atwood-Ferguson.  GB (Gifted and Blessed) has worked with folks such as Steve Spacek, …

LA Premiere of Timeless DVD Series, This Saturday 5.01.2010

After much anticipation, this Saturday will be the LA premiere for the screening of Timeless, starring Mulatu, A Suite for Ma Dukes, and Verocai, with live re-edits by J. Rocc of all three DVD’s.  The screening will end in a Q & A session as stated in the flyer with all relevant info, above.  Attendees of the premiere will also be informed of the location for the afterparty with music provided by J. Rocc, Quantic, Coleman and a special guest.

The Papillion Institute of Art (PIA) announces its grand opening on April
15, 2010 from 7pm to 11 PM. The grand opening to be held at the gallery (1835 South Main Street
Los Angeles, CA 90015) will feature the institutes inaugural exhibit, The Hello Show, a body of work curated to
highlight the works of painters, photographers and visual artists from around the world. In addition to visual arts, the
opening night of The Hello Show will feature performances by Rob Roy, Johnny Polygon, Miguel Atwood
Fergueson, and other surprise performers; with NoMSG (Obey, Elsewhere Studios) on the ‘one’s and two’s.’

All are welcome to attend and may RSVP by emailing rsvp@papillionart.orSpeaking of A Suite for Ma Dukes, Instead of showing all three films back to back or showing all three films, J. Rocc, (of the World Famous Beat Junkies) who also has a new record in the works, will be DJing all three films, using the latest Serato technology.  Manipulating the films using vinyl on turntables to control the hi-res film files and creating an amazing megamix of all three films. As far as I know, never has this been done to premier a film or indeed a series of films ever. The screenings will be followed by Q&A w/ B+, Eric Coleman, and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, with after-party to follow, J. Rocc as the main guest DJ. There will be a VTech IS9181 WiFi Internet Radio giveaway at each screening I’m told so dont sleep
