On December 16, 2012, 1,500 Angelenos were treated to a very special and once in a lifetime concert, “That 70′s Soul”. A very special night dedicated to the great soul of the 70s. Not a tribute concert, but an opportunity to pay homage to some of the greatest songs ever written and performed. This was not a chance to over the music, but rather a chance to pay homage and expand on the songs.

A star studded night, graces by the likes of Sly Stone, George Clinton, Shuggie Otis, Leon Ware, James Gadson, Seu Jorge, just to name a few. The Ensemble itself was full on fire and the Maestro, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, blazed the undeniable trail of greatness!

Miguel Atwood-Ferguson Ensemble – Shine feat. Pharoahe Monch from 2011 UCLA JazzReggae Festival – 2012 Details Inside (Video)

UCLA’s JazzReggae Festival, the largest student run music festival in the United States, hits this coming Memorial Day Weekend in Los Angeles. The 2 day event features The Roots, Booker T. Jones, Thundercat, Gary Clark Jr., and more on Jam Day and Collie Buddz, Shaggy, and others on Reggae Day.

In support of the upcoming festivities, check out this great video of last year’s performance from the Miguel Atwood-Ferguson Ensemble featuring Pharoahe Monch, performing his song “Shine” alongside an All-Star cast of musicians including Meshell Ndegeocello on bass. This video gives fans a taste of what this year’s festival will be like, featuring legendary artists alongside a beautiful environment provided by the UCLA campus.

Alongside MdCL’s skills on beats, bass-lines, synths and more, fellow LA-dweller nia andrews – who has performed with Janelle Monae and Common – brings earnest, honey-dipped vocals and songwriting chops. Other contributors include strings virtuoso Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (recent collaborator of Flying Lotus), whose stunning arrangements and viola playing create an epic, new school soul vibe; and sought-after players Lil’ John Roberts and Mike Feingold appear on drums and guitar, respectively.
