The end of 2012 was a weird one for DJ Shadow. Steadily doing his thing, which included the All Basses Covered DJ tour following the release of his career-spanning box set, the turntablist was tossed into the spotlight in December when his set at South Beach club Mansion was cut short for allegedly being “too futuristic.” The venue issued an apology that implied some heads will roll, but the incident reminded folks across the electronic music spectrum that the differences between the mainstream and underground are as stark as ever.

To start off 2013, Shadow is rolling with the notoriety, uploading a 90 minute set showcasing the sounds that got him removed from the decks in Miami. According to team Shadow, the story behind the mix is as follows:

Beginning in the Summer of 2012 with his Low End Theory guest spots, DJ Shadow’s “All Basses Covered” set has morphed and evolved to incorporate as many different contemporary genres of urban and electronic music as possible. From hardcore rap to footwork and juke and beyond, Shadow has combed the web to curate seamless and dexterous blends of the most progressive sounds bubbling up from the underground. ‘Too hard?’ ‘Too future?’ Or just too raw? As always, DJ Shadow has provoked crucial flashpoints of discussion about the discipline of DJ’ing that have defined our turbulent times.

Inspired, aggressive and…turbulent, the mix is already in the running for our best of 2013 list.

There apparently is a little bit of justice in the world. Last weekend, DJ Shadow‘s set was cut short at Miami nightclub Mansion, for being “too futuristic.” The internet obviously blew up with fans worldwide defending the legendary DJ who was performing as part of his All Bases Covered Tour. Today, Mansion issued a public apology to DJ Shadow:

“We offer our most sincere apologies to DJ Shadow and his fans for his set being cut short at Mansion this past weekend. This error should not have happened and will not happen again, especially as we pride ourselves on creating an environment that cultivates and respects innovators such as DJ Shadow. We have learned a lot from this error and made changes within our organization to ensure that Mansion’s vision, and the vision of our guests, will never be compromised again.”  -Mansion Nightclub, Miami

Just when you thought the clubbing world couldn’t get any more tasteless, news this weekend that DJ Shadow was kicked off the decks of Miami’s Mansion club. This just months after similar incidents involving house DJs Mark Farina and Dennis Ferrer and the crowds that allegedly paid to see them.

Shadow was asked to end his set approximately 20 minutes after it began, and was replaced by the far far far less legendary DJ No Máz. The incident was captured on video, with Shadow telling the crowd “I’ve waited a long time to play here, but they said this shit is too future for all y’all.” He then went to his Twitter account to proclaim, “I don’t care if I get kicked out of every rich kid club on the planet. I will never sacrifice my integrity as a DJ…ever.”

What makes this incident perhaps even more perplexing is that the night was part of Shadow’s “All Bases Covered” tour and was heavily promoted as such on the Mansion website, as well as in the local press. So why do respected DJs continue to get bumped off the decks for playing the music that made them famous? And why do clubs and promoters continue to place DJs in front of unappreciative audiences? And while we’re at it, why do people pay large covers ($30 in the case of DJ Shadow) to hear music they don’t like? And did the fans who did knowingly and eagerly pay to see Shadow get their money back when the plug was pulled?

The problem will continue as long as promoters, venues, managers, booking agents and DJs continue to lump all music played on turntables together as a single scene/genre, ignoring the immense differences in sounds, at the expense of fans and musicians alike,

UPDATE: Madonna has responded to Deadmau5′s criticism that the singer should not have promoted drug use at Ultra Music Festival by asking “Who here has seen Molly?” We don’t really buy it (the pop icon’s latest album is called MDNA) but here’s the exchange via Twitter:

To which she answered: “Communication is always best. You should have called me first, we could have cleared it up ‘privately’ See you on the road.”

Madonna: “From one mouse to another. I don’t support drug use and I never have. I was referring to the song called ‘Have You Seen Molly’ written by my friend Cedric Gervais who I almost worked with on my last album.”

Deadmau5: “Fair enough, I was just voicing my concerns as i usually do. +1 respect for clearing it up personally.”

Madonna: “Communication is always best. You should have called me first, we could have cleared it up ‘privately’ See you on the road.”

Deadmau5: “Sure. Regardless, just be a little more aware of what you *should* represent at EDM events, and I’ll watch my mouth.”

She also included a classic photo wearing mouse ears. Pretty clever. PLUR y’all.

While we were enjoying a nice quiet weekend away from the madness of Miami, it seems that the always controversial (at least when she’s not performing at the Superbowl) Madonna dropped in on Avcii‘s set at Ultra Music Festival with a not so sly references to MDMA (ecstasy) for the gigantic crowd.

The singer asked the giant crowd, “How many of you have seen ‘Molly?’” Molly of course being a a slang term for MDMA. The singer said it while wearing a shirt bearing the name of her latest album, MDNA, another not-so-subtle reference to the drug.

While few seem to mind Madge’s recent phenethylamine-fueled aesthetic, Deadmau5 wasn’t so amused, taking to his Facebook to blast the material girl by posting, “’HUR DUR HAS ANYONE SEEN MOLLY???’ Such a great message for the young music lovers at ultra. quite the f’n philanthropist. but hey, at least yer HIP AND TRENDY! fucking cant smack my head hard enough right now.”

He went on justify his reaction by posting:

“Seriously, i giveth not a fucking single FUCK for slating on madonna for reaching an entirely NEW level of idiocy … i can appreciate her meteoric career, and all good deeds done, but WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT? That’s your big contribution to EDM? Thats your big message to ultra attendies? hipsterspeak for looking for drugs? fuck off you fucking IDIOT. fuck.”

And then later posted a more measured clarification on his Tumblr page.

You can see Madonna’s initial statement at the :45 second mark of this video. While there’s no denying the singer’s long running contributions to dance music, it’s rather painful to watch the 54 year old mother of four pause right before jumping off the deep end with the word “Molly.” Like she choked on the script someone else told her to say.

From what we can tell via the first :90 trailer, CUFI has all the flashing lasers, leaping DJs and bouncing boobies one experiences when actually attending UMF in Miami. It also features a someone incongruous radio DJ voiceover that you’ll have to sit through for the first 30 seconds. We suggest keeping that segment on mute and just enjoying the bikinis in silence.

Lot’s of rappers like to party, but you always knew that hanging with Big Boi would be something special. One half of Outkast spent the weekend onboard what he called the “#teatime #Playcation #Chillaxin” carribean cruise, only to get stopped coming back to the Port of Miami carrying ecstasy pills, MDMA powder and Viagra pills.

According to Big Boi’s lawyer, the contraband was found in the “collective luggage” which we assume means the weed carrier in the rappers entourage. Big Boi is currently out on $16,000 bail.

Big Boi uploaded a few pics of his ocean-going adventure onto Lockerz.com, including this photo of the shipping containers stacked at the port with the caption “Probably so much dope in those containers…”

Did you know that Burger King was founded in Miami? Yeah, Miami the same place where the Kardashian’s filmed that one show and where all these “elite” art events+music things go on. Kinda hard to imagine that the birthplace of the whopper is Miami, amiright?!
