M.I.A. “Born Free” (NSFW) (Video)

M.I.A has unleashed the video for her new Suicide-sampling scuzz-rock lead single, “Born Free.” The clip was directed by Romain-Gavras, who gave us Justice’s ultra-violent “Stress” video a few years back. You might notice a few similarities between the two clips. Just replace marauding gangs in the Paris ghetto with marauding storm troopers in the Los Angeles ghetto.

Diplo Covers Beyonce “Halo” (MP3)

Lat year, we eagerly watch to see if Diplo would take home a Grammy with M.I.A. and Switch for “Paper Planes (they didn’t). This year, we didn’t really have a horse in the Grammy race (David Guetta’s co-writing credit on “I’ve Got A Feelings” not withstanding). But Diplo had his own particularly skewed take, releasing a Major Lazer cover of Beyoncé’s “Halo” with Elephant Man on vocals, just as the pop starlet won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Vampire Weekend. You love them or hate them or love to hate them. The question of how authentic they are in their music and dress seems to be the Achilles heel for this quartet, and the blogosphere lauds them one day, raises concerns over their sweaters, then hypes the shit out of the leaks and this new album. From all the controversy and adulation, you’d think Contra marked the coming of the Messiah.

Puma Gets Africa Hot While MIA Stays Too Cool

Last night Puma hosted “The African Bazaar,” a night dedicated to increasing awareness about the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust. Industry players and Hollywood stars–spotted Ed Norton–were out to support the cause. The space was decked out with Puma gear, crates and oil barrels with brush and plants everywhere, electronic candles creating a warm and inviting space. Seating was on rough-looking-splinter-wielding benches and low cushioned couches. It was over-the-top with hors d’oeuvres from one of L.A.’s trendiest new dining spots, STREET. The Hit + Run crew set up shop and was making custom screen printed tees for an endless line of buzzing guests. A photo booth was set up and the images projected in a slideshow on the wall.
