Kanye’s Naked Listening Party

In basketball, they call it a “heat check.” Kobe Bryant has just hit eight shots in a row, so he pulls up from 35 feet just because he’s open, just because he can, just to see how hot he really is. Most of the time, these shots tend to clang off the side of the rim. And sometimes, Kobe is just Kobe and the shot is guaranteed to go in. Somewhere in the middle, Kanye West’s 808s & Heartbreak is that. West’s first three albums have put him atop the pop music stratosphere. He can release a song for free on his blog, and still top the iTunes singles chart. That song can be downtempo emo electronica and still set the soundtrack for dance parties.

‘”Come See Killa’ = Classic Cam”

Very few empeefrees still get us antsy with zshare’s 20 second tick, tick, tick to download. But every Cam’ron release still does that. Even if there’s a large chance that the track will be completely dismissable, it’ll forever be within the realm of possibility that the song will be perfect…or at least perfectly weird. Just recently, “Bottom of the Pussy Hole” was the latter. This new joint lays somewhere in the middle, but has that epic-could-give-a-fuck-cinematic-melodrama that made Purple Haze a certified classic.

We The People Festival: Music, Art, and Activism

After having to arrange the logistics for the One Nation Hip Hop Summit earlier that day (more to come later), I was burnt out. Nonetheless, I sat my way through traffic on my way to downtown LA to hit up the Los Angeles State Historic Park for this year’s We the People Festival. Given the size and magnitude of the line up, I was expecting a bigger crowd. It may have just been the dispersion of people among one of the many stages at festival. Not to mention, the great array of vendors that displayed their creative articles for sale.

I got there a bit late. Actually besides missing Look Daggers, I was on time to see the RZA tear up the stage. With a tribute to ODB, C.R.E.A.M, Triumph, and a few other Wu-Tang …
