Bright Eyes New Album Preview!

Say what you will about Conor Oberst, but the singer stands out as an authentic guy. Among the fame-hungry whores of Hollywood or the beyond-coolness of New York hipsters, Oberst is living life out in the wide plains of Omaha, Nebraska—not to make a point, just because that’s where he’s from—Maybe to leverage a more normal existence. He never packed up his bags to permanent digs on either coast and that must be at least partially why his music comes across so very real—true to the day-to-day drama of regular life and universal in its resonance with the larger, unpredictable human experience.

His new album, Cassadaga, available Apr 10th on Saddle Creek records is at once aimless and destined. An album sneak peek after the jump…

Mr. Scruff’s American Weekend

With a proper follow up to 2002's car-moving Trouser Jazz long overdue, Mr. Scruff’s been hard at work on new tracks for much of the last year. But the always amusing and talented gent is taking a weekend holiday to cross the pond and play a trio of his typically lengthy DJ sets.

Reached via e-mail ahead of the trip, Scruff said he’s busy in the studio and this is why he’s only playing those three dates on this trip to the States. He plans to come back when he’s done with work on the as yet unnamed new album.

Dinosaur Jr. – Nike collab

Proto-grunge rockers Dinosaur Jr. surprised some folks when they reunited 2 years ago. Now they have their own Nike shoe. This from a band who probably couldn't be bothered to wear Doc Martins. I loved Dinosaur Jr as a youth, and still rate Green Mind and You're Living All Over Me somewhere in my top 100 ever. But J Mascis is the only interview i ever hung up on (he was being a real tool) and I've been kinda sour on 'em since. I'll wait for the Rage Against the Machine limited flip-flop, a'ight?

Industry Reacts to Drama’s Drama

“Get Right” indeed, as the RIAA steps on a hip-hop staple insiders are struggling to regain some footing. Here's some early reaction to DJ Drama’s arrest and the raid on his Affiliates offices.

DIPSET'S A&R DUKE DA GOD:
“My first reaction is ‘Wow,’ this hits real close to home. We’re not sure what’s going on, just trying to figure it out. Labels pay Drama to do what he does, you have to be special, you have to be anointed to do mixtapes and everyone comes to Drama for that, he had the lanes, you can hear it in the drops on his tapes. People search him out.

“It’s a travesty, everyone in the industry is shook up. What’s today? Jan 16th changed the whole world, the whole world I operate in. …

Wooster Collective

Adding to the annals of famous shows and last hoorahs, Sunday Dec 17th will be remembered as the day when Wooster Collective held the final show at11 Spring which found 35 artists from several continents and eras getting up over every square inch.

The line around three of the four sides of the block was itself a work of art, both conceptually – as a statement on the indoor show of mainly outdoor artists; the reverting to the fetishism of the artist as savior + gallery …
