Palladium Boots Saves Detroit (And How The Media Gets it Wrong) (Video)


OK, maybe that’s hyperbole. Or maybe it’s a metaphor for how sorry the state of our American news media is. Did it take a footwear company to correct the conventional wisdom and negative media narrative about Detroit? Palladium Boots, with the help of Vice magazine’s advertising agency Virtue has produced an eye-opening short film about the city that everybody loves to feel sorry for. But instead of blindly recycling file footage of Devil’s Night fires or bombed out city blocks, director Thalia Mavros opted for an original take on the city: something positive.

Don’t Mess With Tak Toyoshima

Don't say we didn't warn you 

Tak Toyoshima, creator of the razor-sharp Secret Asian Man comic strip and art director of the edgy newspaper, Boston’s Weekly Dig, dares you to mess with him. Okay, he really just wants people to stop making fun of Asian delivery drivers and hopes for once that an Asian can be a leading actor in a non-martial arts film.

Toyoshima is the first and only Asian-American to have a comic strip syndicated in a daily newspaper. Now, several years after launching his strip, he is set to release The Daily Days, a collection of his syndicated work on Amazon.com. I caught up with my old colleague (full disclosure – I worked with Toyoshima at the Dig for nearly a decade) in advance of his debut book. iPad: A Mild Mannered Device or God Save The Media?

Typical of introductions to Apple’s new products, reaction to the unveiling of the iPad has been swift and polarized. The last few months have brought countless news stories, blog posts and general punditry, and when combined with Apple’s penchant for extreme secrecy, the wide and complicated range of emotions was almost inevitable. Apple is both extremely innovative and very cautious with its product launches. Watching the live blog updates was like reliving the launch of the original iPhone in 2007, and as with that historic event, I’ve found myself once again looking at an awesome device with a limited, almost crippled functionality.
