Matthew Dear’s Big Hands pics from Chicago

Over the weekend Matthew Dear’s Big Hands reached their way to Chicago’s Smartbar. Backed by bass, drums and his omnipresent laptop, the keenly dressed Dear showed off the frontman chops that have been earning his latest effort rave reviews.

Silhouetted in front of some mesmerizing video projections, Dear and the band added a bit of chop to their techno-pop sound as they worked through much of the excellent Asa Breed album. They didn’t forget to throw in classics “Tide” and “Dog Days” and seemed to be having just as much fun as the crowd.

More 'Tet, this time in conventional remix mode, adding abstract beauty to Dear's new offering. This has a nagging similarity to an old INXS tune, oddly, as Hebden adds a plaintiff piano riff to Dear's monotone vocals, but thankfully the trademark echoey hi-hats and epileptic sci-fi synth-stabs soon take it down a whole other road. The only down side to a Four Tet remix, of course, is that it invariably makes your original version seem a little drab by comparison.

Movement: DEMF 07 Day 2

After a night of too little sleep, day two of DEMF 2007 got off to a sluggish start and early in the day it was hard to find some decent noise to occupy my head, but by the time evening wore on a procession of international talents made things happen and showed what the rest of the planet has done with Detroit’s music.

The day picked up where the previous …

Movement: DEMF 07 Day 1

The big downpours mostly stayed away, but spotty rain throughout day one of DEMF 2007 kept the crowds down and relatively tame, but several standout performances and a retreat indoors for the requisite afterpartying put a positive start on the weekend.

Unfortunately, hotel delays kept me away from the party’s opening hours and I missed out on Pole’s early timeslot, but despite that disappointment the party got started off right with Gary Martin mixing up some tribal techno in one of two tented stages.

Around this same time at the riverfront Pyramid Stage legendary German dub-techno duo Rhythm & Sound were just getting started on their marathon of dub and reggae with help …

Asa Breed

Released by Ghostly International

He probably doesn't want to hear this, but Matthew Dear has been a disappointment of late, seemingly content to jump on the minimal-techno gravy train to Europe, releasing banging tracks as Audion that stood zero chance of working outside the confines of the darkest nightclub bacchanal and apparently thrilled to let fans of his techno-pop work'last seen on 2004's Leave Luck to Heaven'to assume the worst.

So where the hell did Asa Breed come from? A special planet where focused electronic song craft leaves everything else in ...
