After seeing the Eagles at the Hollywood Bowl recently, and Redman & Method Man headline “Spring Gathering” Saturday, “Newports” was a welcome change of pace from the week before. No introduction is necessary for House Shoes, with the Suite for Ma Dukes DVD now available in stores and online, the Do-Over collab vinyl, King James EP and Proof Memorial Concert at highlands has been keeping a break neck pace and still killing it with that signature Motor City vibe. From the plethora of J Dilla exclusive material I’ve heard him spin or the shelved MCA Dilla LP tracks, his production chops are nothing new.

Javelin, the Brooklyn-by-way-of-Providence duo, have been playing loft parties and art galleries and releasing CD-Rs, 12”s, and mixes for the past five years, but it’s No Mas that serves as their official full-length debut. This means that some of the songs here have already been out for a while, redone or edited a bit for the new album (for example, “Mossy Woodland” now has vocals), but it's no matter, because Javelin’s brand of Billyburg summer pop—breezy with minimal low-end, flat electronic-y depth, good for ear buds or beach stereos, never too serious or intense—manages to be fun without ever being trivial.
The Timeless Concert Series wasn’t just a series of stunning performances. All the shows were framed by our favorite DJs. Madlib, J. Rocc, House Shoes and Quantic all came with amazing sets. Cut Chemist even raised the bar with a one turntable romp. One the eve of the Verocai show, DJ Nuts was supposed to perform with Madlib. He made the arduous journey from Brasil after completing a show with Marcelo D2. He endured a punishing series of flights that took 20 hours to complete, and in the end, a plane delay caused him to miss his own set at the start of the show. In a pinch, J. Rocc stepped up to the plate and performed a stellar set at the Luckman in his place, and Nuts went on to DJ a mind-blowing two hour set at the after-party. So much of Mochilla’s dealings in Brasil would not have been possible without Rodrigo Teixera (known to the world as DJ Nuts). The Verocai concert surely would never have happened without him. His role in helping with the pre and post coordination was enormous.…MORE
Bonobo, also known as DJ and producer Simon Green, is back with the highly anticipated follow-up to his 2009 release Live at Koko with a new record, Black Sands. With already an impressive body of work with the full-lengths Animal Magic, Dial 'M' For Monkey, Days to Come, in addition to countless EPs and single releases (my personal favorite being the Scuba EP), Simon Green has kept busy by growing and innovating beyond his previous work of years past. His compositional technique, rivaling some of the work put out by DJ Shadow (see Endtroducing), labelmates Amon Tobin and Blockhead (see Music By Cavelight), Madlib, and Guillermo Scott-Herren (also known as Prefuse 73) illustrates a nuanced meeting point for the inspired fusing of Green’s varied melodious interests.
For those familiar with the work of Arthur Verocai, this video (click here) and mp3 download should be very special for you. Verocai’s 1972 S/T release has garnered much attention and admiration from the hip hop community, sampled by MF Doom, Little Brother, 9th Wonder for Ludacris, and many others. The video and audio present today is a never-before-heard composition specifically written and performed for last year’s Timeless event, and today, is the first time it’s share with the world, in support of the Timeless DVD Box Set brought to you by the good folks at Mochilla. Even more exciting is the remix for Verocai dropping next week! Below is the official press release text from the VTech site. …MORE
