“The Harder They Hate, The Harder I Go”: Ciara talks to @TheAlexChapman

Since the dawn of time, the music industry has bred their pop stars young. Britney Spears sold 20 million copies worldwide at the ripe age of 19, NSync began to headline tours in Europe as arguably post-pubescent 17 year-olds, and the late Aaliyah recorded the celebrated Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number with a mere 14 years under her belt. With all this being somewhat common knowledge (thanks, WikiLeaks), it should’ve come to no surprise to me that Ciara is only 25.  But when you take a gander at Ciara’s impressive career stats— Over 7 million records sold worldwide, Grammy nominations, and a consistently strong presence on the charts—it’s worth stating that the singer wasn’t born into the entertainment business like some of her contemporaries.

Woodhands Present Their URB Exclusive “No Feelings” Mixtape (MP3)

Canadian caveat Woodhands have been doing big things, travelling cross-county, city and country touring their asses off for their latest album Remorescapade. I remember talking to them a while back about the music they loved and could wish they could share more with their fans and the public; which was essentially mainstream and crunk-filled rap. With that gangsta-fire within them, the duo made a brilliantly done mixtape (with their Woodhands bravado on top) for URB to give away to the world as an exclusive. More info from Woodhands about the mix, the link and tracklist after the jump.

Virgin Free Fest Announces 2010 Line-Up

Everyone knows that music festivals are big business, with tens of millions made (ticket sales, beer vending, corporate sponsorship) and lost (artist fees, production costs) every summer. But what happens when big business decides to throw it’s own festival? You get Virgin Free Fest. Run as a multi-city paid festival in 2006 and 2007, the mobile phone company’s attempt at playing with big dogs like Coachella, Lollapalooza and Bonarroo never seemed to hit it’s stride—perhaps due to it’s location in Maryland. Then last year, super rich bad-ass mofo Richard Branson decided to make the whole shebang free, and called upon Blink-182, Weezer and Jet to bring in the masses. This year, he’s banking on a cooler selection, including Thievery Corporation, M.I.A., LCD Soundsystem and Temper Trap to do the same. …MORE

Music Going Green (& Your Role In It)

A NOD TO EARTH DAY/WEEK

With Earth Day (4/22) here, the question as to how the music industry can and has gone green is important. We’ve experienced concerts with environmental initiatives, album artwork printed with vegan dyes, soft packs instead of jeweled CD cases, artist contributions made to organizations, press releases with philanthropic undertones, but has the music industry as a whole gone green? I can’t confidently say yes. …MORE
