Lollapalooza- Karen O outdresses Bjork…almost

The solar furnace of day one gave to a gray blanket over Chicago for day two, a major relief for sun stroked concert goers. Those brave survivors of Friday night who managed to get back early enough were faced with a choice between massive Swedish electronic/tuba collective I’m from Barcelona, and Canadian media darling’s Tokyo Police Club, who opened the southern main stage with a finely honed set of precision indie rock. Immediately following were Minneapolis band Tapes N Tapes, whose inspiration ranges from early period Pavement to mid period Pavement, but they proved a very solid tribute act nonetheless.

Lollapalooza Day 1 report

The word for today kids is; sweltering. With the sun beating down Chicago like an angry Cyclops, and only faint lake front breezes, the three day Lollapalooza is shaping up to be an ironman contest once again, though not quite as brutal as the first year of the revival, which was like a molten lava hot torture chamber. This year the scope is simply huge, with eight stages spanning the entire length of Grant Park; it’s easily twice the size of the 2005 inaugural. Murderous loop traffic and poor planning put us way behind, and simply maneuvering around the venue and basic orientation can eat up a good chunk …

Perry Farrell: Been Caught Healing

Lollapalooza founder resurrects the spirit of Jim Morrison in an effort to save the world

As I wait for Perry Farrell in an upstairs room at Santa Monica recording studio The Village, I hear him out in the hallway looking for me. He enters the room with a huge smile. “Come on, I’ve got a much better room for us,” he says, leading me upstairs.

Though we’ve become friendly over the years from seeing each other out often around LA and from the many times I’ve interviewed Farrell, it wouldn’t matter if I was a long-lost relative or we’d never met-he welcomes everybody into his world with the same warmth.

In his two decades in music, Farrell has done it all-fronted the iconic alternative band Jane’s Addiction; founded Lollapalooza, the most important outdoor festival of the last two decades and arguably one of music’s most revolutionary ideas (without Lolla would there have been Warped, Ozzfest, …
