9th Wonder: Producer/Dream Merchant

Love him or hate him, you've gotta love 9th Wonder's consistency. The North Carolina-born and bred producer has made a name for himself as the former 3rd member of the Durham collective Little Brother, and producer of cuts for the likes of Jay-Z, Destiny's Child, and Mary J. Blige.

If you're not familiar with 9th, one thing you've got to know is that he's a hip-hop head that loves hip-hop for the love of hip-hop. His productions reflect that, as they capture the sound of that Large Pro/Pete Rock era of the genre. 9th recently explained to XXL where he's going with his new album The Dream Merchant, vol. 2:

“… I’m trying to mix [it] up a little bit. [There’s] not too many producers out there right now concentrating on funk and soul. Everything is electronic, which …

Hump Day Bumpables

9th Wonder has cats straight merkin’ some shit, without talking about they rims, they chain, or how they sell cane. With everybody missing Murs or Little Brother jumping over these tracks, other rappers can and will continue to make 9th’s solo a thing of beauty. Dream Merchant Vol. 2, which will be released on Oct 9 through Six Hole/Hall of Justus Records. Royce 5’ 9,” rhymes a Brokeback joke in an otherwise applause worthy verse while Naeledge from Kidz In The Hall sounds just as dope over a Ninf beat that he does over the ones were used to hearin’ him over from Double O. Leaving the least known Vandalyzm to “lick shots like tequila” straight out the St. Lou.

Free Chicago Fest Brings Out Underground Rap OGs

Quite possibly the best FREE hip-hop show mini-fest the Midwest has seen this side of the millenium, Microsoft wrangled to Union Park performances by Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Blackstar (!!), Jean Grae, Bilal, Little Brother and Qualo as Chicago's hottest rising stars (Cool Kids, Mano, Hollywood Holt) juked it out on the sidelines. There's never been a better soundtrack to indulge in much libation AND wolf down tasty BBQ'd eats. Fun was had by all.

Little Brother – Good Clothes (Review)

Little Brother

Good Clothes

Released by ABB Records/Hall of Justus

You gotta love a sense of humor in hip-hop. Phonte' delivers the punch lines via singing on 'Good Clothes', talking about dudes in the club with leather coats on ('Take that coat off n!ggaaaaa!') and healthier women with clothes a little too small for them ('Better go to Lane Bryant!'). This song also offers one of the better verses I've heard from Big Pooh. There's nothing spectacular about the beat and the song doesn't exactly get me hype for their album but everything works well together and I love ...

Little Brother speak on 9th Wonder

I'm posting this because someone probably cares—and certainly cares a lot—but XXL has Little Brother's first post-split with 9th Wonder interview up on their site. Not saying that to be flippant, The Listening was great and The Minstrel Show had some great moments, but 9th Wonder's production has always cemented their sound. But it's always eye-gouging fun to read dudes lambaste the major label system and no one has ever gouged more eyes been better than Phonte and Big Pooh. So, uhh, does anyone care?
