SXSW Day Three Recap: BBQs & Beats

Day Three of SXSW was a burner in terms of what could and would happen in terms of pleasant surprises. Starting off with daytime drinking at Carrera’s SXSW haven, the meandering began at the FADER Fort to meet and chat with WARP/LuckyMe wunderkind Hudson Mohawke, we ran into a man in a kilt. The day just got weirder after that; with every obstacle trying to interfere with the continuation of Day Three’s set-in-stone journey. Traffic, cancellations and BBQ were the main reasons. Walking into Stubb’s, there was an expectation that wobbler-extraordinaire Rusko was going to spin a set in the outdoor space. After eating some mac n’ cheese, the twitterverse said otherwise. Rusko couldn’t come to Austin due to layovers in Colorado, and Beats Antique, the headliner, would …

SXSW Day Two Recap: Dropping The Bombs To Dropping The Funk

A variety of sounds stream within a day's travel in Texas.

As the sun shined along the sunny streets of Austin for the 2nd day of SXSW, the noticeable trend of Sixth Street shenanigans were multiplying rapidly. Jugglers, free-huggers and bands setting up on every street corner were appearing amongst the thousands of patrons walking through the controlled chaos. Straying away from the eventual headache, the Levi’s FADER Fort once again became a hub for bloggers, writers and media as a clubhouse to keep the chaos away. It also turned out to be a bit better than the first day there.

The combination of a perfect sunny day, chilled beverages and great music are a classic amongst many concertgoers. All of that was fulfilled with a greater emphasis on music, as Local …

SXSW Day One Recap: A Wicked Warp To Austin

The journey starts off with a mind-numbing bang.

Descending upon Austin, Texas on the 17th of March, the expectations brought upon the all-encompassing journey that is SXSW are at an extreme high. Press scurrying to the Austin Convention Center to get their badges, kids RSVP’ing to any free unofficial festival events they can, and the hard-knock artist/promoter trying to get a second of attention from passer-bys on Sixth Street. What is missing from that entire spiel is the sense of euphoric confusion there is in terms of just walking around Austin. Day 1 surely brought an introduction to the madness and ended it in a fashion that wasn’t just great, but the perfect wake-up to call to the joy that this festival brings.

Arriving with the nuisance that traffic would be an issue (and paying $15 more than a regular cab ride), the badge pick-up was no sweat. Within …

SXSW Day Two Picks: Bomba Estereo and Holy Fuck (Video)

Returning for their second SXSW tour-de-force, Bogota’s Bomba Estereo unleashed a frenzy at Levi’s Fader Fort yesterday evening. It still surprised me that Liliana Saumet never dreamed of becoming a musician and yet, here she is. Her hybrid singing and rapping style is more polished since last seeing her perform; however, her raw energy is formidable and contagious. Perhaps more surprising was drummer Kike Egurrola, who had his moment to shine and delivered unstoppable beat after beat. It must have been the setting which allowed everyone’s personality and skills to fully unfurl before the audience. Julian Salazar on the guitar tore it up and certainly the mastermind behind it all, Simon Mejia, was in fine form alternating between his bass, computer, and keys. Ultimately, all the touring the band has done to support 2009’s Blow Up has refined their dynamic …
