Scratcha DVA (aka Leon Smart) is not someone who ever seems to slow down. He spent a large part of the last 6 years in the Rinse.fm studios hosting the daily Breakfast Show, as well as making a name for himself in grime, producing, DJing and running his DVA label. It was announced not too long ago that he would be leaving the Breakfast Show to focus more on his personal career and took off to tour South Africa with Kode9, as well as announcing a handful of other dates. Somehow in between it all he managed to produce his outstanding debut LP called Pretty Ugly, which is out this week on Hyperdub. We got in touch with DVA for some catching up in a rare moment of downtime to talk about DVA the DJ, DVA the producer, Pretty Ugly, vibes, and sleeping in the studio. Follow the jump to dive in.

While 2011 was heavily saturated with material from inexperienced young producers, 2012 already has a lot to offer in terms of releases from seasoned producers that are well worth waiting for. Goth-Trad (real name Takeaki Maruyama) has been producing since 1998, but this February will see the release of his debut full-length entitled New Epoch on the Deep Medi label, headed by Mala of Digital Mystikz.
Despite being halfway across the world from the hotbed of all things ‘bass’ in the UK, Goth-Trad emerged from experimental beginnings in Japan’s underground electronic scene and has soldiered onwards, exploring dubstep from a fascinating new perspective and pushing it forward. Hyperdub boss Kode9 describes him as “a one-man army mutating the UK hardcore continuum in Japan,” and the strength of his debut affirms his talent. The album reflects a decade of experience both producing and DJing across genres, as well as being heavily influenced by the earthquake that devastated Japan in March of 2011.
Below, you can view the official video for the first single off the album, Airbreaker, out January 30th, and you can listen to the official preview of the single.
UK dubstep and techno adventurers Burial, Kode9, Zomby, Ikonika and more have delivered tracks for a new compilation presented by Scion and Adult Swim, two brands that know how to promote excellent music in order to sell their own wares. The digital comp, titled Unclassified, offers up 18 rare and unreleased tunes by the elite of the UK’s adventurous electronic music scene, including Actress, SBTRKT, XXXY and 11 others. You can stream the Ikonika track, “World On Mute” here, or go the official site to play and download the full collection.
Ever since the first releases way back in 1995, !K7 Records’s DJ-Kicks series of mix CDs have not only featured the most interesting and exciting DJs of the era—from Carl Craig (1996) to Kode9 (2010)—playing the sound that made them the hot stuff of the moment, but each disc has been sure to close with an original track or remix from each DJ, making a formidable catalog of original music in it’s own right.
German nu-disco/deep house producer Motor City Drum Ensemble is the latest red-hot name to pick up the DJ-Kicks mantle, and his oringal track, “L.O.V.E.” is more than worthy of inclusion in the collection. …MORE

As if that wasn’t enough, Zomby gives away “Things Fall Apart”, a cut that features Animal Collective’s Panda Bear.
