Toronto has been on a roll lately, and things only seem to be looking up. The month of September alone is seeing names like Rustie, Actress, Jimmy Edgar, XI, Venus X and more all passing through the city, and right in the middle of it all is a visit from the legend Kode9. The Hyperdub label head will grace Wrongbar TODAY (Wednesday, September 19th) as the headliner of this week’s Bassmentality. There are few DJs in this world who are as well-travelled and well-versed as Kode9, who has seen the evolution of genres like dubstep and UK funky from their very beginnings. He’s the man responsible for bringing Burial’s music to the masses and he DJed regularly at both DMZ and FWD>> where the dubstep movement (and …
Whoever said celebrating your independence was all about barbeques and fireworks obviously has never been to a Deviation party. Based in London, the long-running series is a reflection on sonics far and wide, curated by BBC Radio One don Benji B, who has successfully taken the reigns of the underground community ever since Mary Anne Hobbs departure in September 2010. Shrouded in the clouded veil of bassbin legend, Deviation is coming to New York City on July 4th (with special thanks to RBMA), with acts that will tantalize anyone into running from their grills and go straight to Le Poisson Rouge. Kode9 needs no introduction, the Hyperdub don has put out some of the best music of 2012 recently with Laurel Halo’s Quarantine and LV’s Sebenza on the way. Joining him will be Montreal’s ambassador of all things cooking, Lunice. He’s been busy cooking up a storm with Hudson Mohawke for their collaborative effort, TNGHT, releasing their EP on Warp/LuckyMe. Rounding out the lineup is resident Benji B, who will be debuting in New York City. Check out more info on Deviation, as well as the flier after the jump.
In preparation for next weekend’s Bloc Festival in the UK (July 6-7), showcase presenters Bleep.com have assembled a free 5-song EP featuring an impressive grip of artists who will be performing over the weekend—including Battles (remixed by Kode9), Four Tet and Martyn, as well as Cosmic TRG and Jon Hopkins. You can download the EP for free by “Liking” this Facebook Post.
We’re in the thick of festival season and starting tonight, Montrealers will be cutting through their brief moment of thick humidity to take full advantage of their beautiful music-friendly city during the 13th edition of the Mutek festival. Every year the festival boasts one of the most daring lineups in electronic music, making it one of the most respectable and dependable festivals of its kind. This year is no different, and the combination of pioneers with newcomers makes waiting for some of the evenings feel a little bit like Christmas. It honestly was a little difficult to whittle down our list of must-see’s to these five, so we strongly suggest you check out the full schedule for yourself – you can also buy tickets at the same site. Scratcha DVA (aka Leon Smart) is not someone who ever seems to slow down. He spent a large part of the last 6 years in the Rinse.fm studios hosting the daily Breakfast Show, as well as making a name for himself in grime, producing, DJing and running his DVA label. It was announced not too long ago that he would be leaving the Breakfast Show to focus more on his personal career and took off to tour South Africa with Kode9, as well as announcing a handful of other dates. Somehow in between it all he managed to produce his outstanding debut LP called Pretty Ugly, which is out this week on Hyperdub. We got in touch with DVA for some catching up in a rare moment of downtime to talk about DVA the DJ, DVA the producer, Pretty Ugly, vibes, and sleeping in the studio. Follow the jump to dive in.
