LV feat. Okmalumkoolkat – Boomslang (Video)

Prepare for one of the most massive releases ever from Hyperdub.

Hyperdub is going on a serious roll at the moment; with the announcement of the long-awaited Darkstar LP finally coming in October as well as upcoming singles from King Midas Sound and (Scratcha) DVA, there’s one more massive bit that’s about to be unleashed:  LV’s upcoming ode to Kwaito (South African house), “Boomslang”. While it may be a different sort of release for LV, who’s known for evocative and intricate rhythms around the 140 BPM range, he steps up massively here not only with a banging beat but with the vocal wisdom of Okmalumkoolkat (try saying that ten times fast). Along with that, this video should whet the appetite of anyone who’s ready to take over the dancefloor. This could very well be one of the best tunes of the year. Video for “Boomslang” after the jump…

Ikonika – Contact, Love, Want, Have (Review)

Ikonika

Contact, Love, Want, Have

Released by Hyperdub

The forward-thinking record label Hyperdub has always put out quality releases time and time again, specifically when it comes to releasing full-length albums. With successful and memorable releases provided by Burial, Kode 9 + The Spaceape and King Midas Sound, the time had come to garner another collection of cohesive audible bits that would form to be the next step in Hyperdub's album history. Enter Ikonika, a producer putting out releases on the label since 2008 (12"s such as Please/Simalcrum and Millie/Direct) and garnered a steady stream of praise for her style of spinning and selection. With rumors of her release starting in early 2009, many were eager and wondering what would come of it. The question that many had raised was: "Would this be a club record or a personal record?" The answer to that question is left to the eye of the beholder, but what is achieved sonically on this record is nothing short of introspective, atmospheric and an all-out good time.

King Midas Sound – Waiting For You (Review)

King Midas Sound

Waiting For You

Released by Hyperdub

Balance is sometimes just as eerie as it is necessary. When one walks down the street at night, usually the environment around that person is controlling his thoughts, his actions and reactions. If it's late, and one is listening to music that is creepy, the environment will start to make that person anxious and fearful of what's next to come. If the person is listening to something relaxing, he will likely feel the same relaxing tones tingle in his bones. But what happens when you take a plethora of ...

King Midas Sound: Noir Dub Escapism

Conversations of Lover's Rock and melting to dubby rhythms with Kevin Martin

Walking down empty streets usually signifies the end of a night for someone, the wind hitting his face, footsteps creepily getting louder and storefronts dimmed. Drunks, gluttons and heathens are all around, as things keep winding down as time passes. The only soundtrack to fuel the night’s depth of darkness is the sounds of King Midas Sound, the dub-child of Kevin Martin (aka The Bug), Roger Robinson and Hitomi. The trio’s tracks inhabit cinematic landscapes, which are unearthed by rhymes, alternately power and soft. Their Hyperdub full-length, Waiting For You, was just released with notable reception, and it comes as no surprise, considering the gears that made the wheels turn. We took time out with one of those gears, Kevin Martin, to speak about the process of songwriting, views on “reviving trip-hop” and much more.
