Live Local Showcase: Downbeat 720

So last night I went to this Downbeat 720 thing that I was invited to. Didn’t know much about it, but it turned out to be really dope.

Downbeat 720 is LA’s premier open stage for high school performers. The program was created by Justin Yoffe, Ameenah Kaplan, Joe Hernandez-Kolski and DJ Jedi several years ago. Sponsored by the City of Santa Monica, twice a month, high school students from around the city make their way by bus, by car, by board, by bike to the Miles Playhouse. They sign up (usually near the bottom of the list if they’re nervous) and they perform. We’ve created a very safe space where students from all different backgrounds can develop their skills as artists. We offer advice and direction with each individual. Barack Is Down With Wilco

Just days after name dropping Weezy, Barack Obama, at a Chicago nightclub, proclaimed that he loves alt-country rockers Wilco, right before lead singer Jeff Tweedy played a set. The statement was in regards to a rumor that the Illinois senator didn’t have any music by them in his ipod.

Keep in mind that when Obama mentioned Lil Wayne it was in the context of making the youth realize that they probably don’t possess the same lyrical chops as Weeze. In other words, Obama acknowledges Wayne’s skills. Wilco and Lil Wayne, hm?? Perhaps Obama could be a candidate for our next guest reviewer? Read the full story at the Associated Press.

Han Cholo x Puma

So… the amazing folks at Puma just sent me pics from the NEW Han Cholo x Puma collab and this sneaker is sick. Titled “The Goldie Han,” the LA-based jewelry label put their skills to work and produced an eye-catching piece with the Puma First Round high top. The use of smooth purple fabric, reflective gold leather, Old English writing and chain-print laces just oozes luxury… and a bit of straight up pimpin.

Flashy and flossy- that’s what it’s all about.

These will only be available at the Han Cholo store in Echo Park… and as with all things exclusive, “The Goldie Han” isn’t light on the wallet. If you wanna rock something this fresh, you’ll have to drop $300. Release date TBA. Hang in …
