The Away Team, Scars & Stripes (Review)

The Away Team

Scars & Stripes

Released by IWWMG/Jamla/Duckdown

North Carolina might have saved hip-hop for a year or two (too bad that was circa 2003 or 2005 depending on your entry point). Khrysis is one of the best producers of the Fruity Loops era. That compressed sound was made for the digital generation and is still easy on the ear when done right. 9th Wonder & Khrysis are descendants of the Native Tongues, that was clear from the outset, why else would the marquee group of their movement be called Little Brother. But the cast on the fractured in-between has to be Da Beatminerz' crackling sound which kept the Boot Camp Clik on the borderline of backpack and blackjack; an export that worked exceedingly well with the Hall Of Justus massive's burgeoning endeavors.

Talib Kweli, Gutter Rainbows (Review)

Talib Kweli

Gutter Rainbows

Released by Javotti Media/3D/Blacksmith

Turn-of-the-year releases are generally greeted with a semi-yawn. With the dust of a phenomenal music year still settling, industry trailblazer Talib Kweli has set his sites on the tricky first quarter burn. His first album free from the constraints of any label directives but his own, Talib seems to be coasting just a bit on this cut-and-paste session. As in, from a pure musical standpoint, outside of a few of repeat-worthy tracks, Gutter Rainbows, is no cure for your current cabin fever.

Copywrite, The Life And Times Of Peter Nelson (Review)

Copywrite

The Life And Times Of Peter Nelson

Released by Man Bites Dog Records

Spit and polish. The aphorism that best defines this triumphant return from an MC that probably swam through more shit than Andy Dufresne. OK, Copywrite didn't do himself any favors with his pill-fueled decision-making and catching bad ones from Camu Tao (R.I.P.) and Icon The Mic King (Copy addresses both of these street rumbles). But all of that gossip and hearsay is immaterial when considering this second release from an artist who's debut dropped in 2002. Jay-Z had him on his radar and we know what happened to Eastern ...

The Foreign Exchange – Authenticity (Review) (Review)

Foreign Exchange

Authenticity

Released by The Foreign Exchange Music

The new FE album "Authenticity" clocks in at a polished eleven tracks, with the memorable "Everything must go” starting off with a synthesizer melody that hypnotizes from start to finish. "This city ain't the same without you" utilizes fan favorite Yazarah's vocals. MTV picking up "The Ballad of Purple St. James’”  first video for rotation is as just a much a testament to the FE+ label, as is the newest tight knit ZO!  full length. Nicolay's solo catalog continues to develop over time, and "Don't Wait" provides the proof Darrien Brockington's eventual solo album is long deserved. I have no doubt we'll see a rise in notoriety of all of the artists in the collective in the not so distant future.
