The weather stayed idyllic, the sounds stayed loud and the crowds who stuck around for the final day of Movement 2009 were treated to massive sets from Detroit’s techno legends, those who took influence from them and someone they looked back to for inspiration.
Flying Lotus
Things started early in the afternoon with glitchy beatmaker Flying Lotus bouncing on stage in a J Dilla T-shirt to the thunderous beats he was pulling from his laptop. The crowd showed plenty of bounce too, but FlyLo seemed to be enjoying himself as much as anyone at that stage. The laid back and loosely arranged set touched on everything breakbeat, showcased a few of his newest tracks and concluded with an impromptu chopping of session of hardcore jungle breaks.

Day three of Movement, Detroit’s Electronic Music Festival ’08 unfolded as expected, with a slow start, a spot of weather, a big finish and plenty of great music throughout. The Paxahau run event closed out running just as smoothly as when it had started two days prior, only the masses in Hart Plaza were a lot less composed and certainly much less rested than they had been upon arrival.
Opening with some thunder in the underground was Detroit DJ Townz who seemed content on continuing the vibe from the previous night. In any other setting, his set might have seemed ridiculously heavy for the mid-afternoon, but the underground stage turns day into night, and the crowd moving to his audio selections seemed to be using his downpour of rhythm to clean …
Day two of Movement, Detroit’s Electronic Music Festival begins somewhat slowly and tenuously as the over partied crowds gradually come back into form and wander out to Hart Plaza, but by the end of the day, the place was packed and everyone seemed revived for the next party.
Word was a great live set from Hearthrob was missed, but the day ended up being about musical variety as The Cool Kids, Richie Hawtin, Kill Memory Crash and James Ruskin all delivered as promised in sets that stood out from among the crowded musical options for the day.
It was already almost evening as Paco Osuna was taking charge in the Beatport tent. A late replacement for Marco Corola, Osuna showed that he deserved his festival set in his own right. …
