Live review: Robyn & Kelis @ The Music Box in L.A. (7.23.10) (MP3)

This was the kick-off performance of Robyn and Kelis’s North American co-headlining road show.  After a few weeks of exchanging tweets about the outing, they decided to name it the “All Hearts” tour. With both of them having new albums out, it was exciting to hear a mix of old bangers and new anthems.

First one out was R&B vamp Kelis, and she was surrounded by 2 dj’s and one drummer. It was all about glitz and glam; she was wearing a purple sequined jumpsuit and a silver sparkly wig, looking like Patrice Rushen on disco overload, and she looked stunning. She opened up with “22nd Century,” a filtered house gem from her new album Flesh Tone, and then continued with old songs like “Young, Fresh N’ New”, …

Kelis – Flesh Tone (Review)

Kelis

Flesh Tone

Released by will.i.am music

After a four-year hiatus, which saw her get more press for both divorcing Nas and giving birth to his child, Kelis is back with fifth studio album Flesh Tone. Long-time Kelis fans might be initially surprised at the sonic switch-up—it’s more dance than quirky R&B—but there’s something totally right about the way Kelis tackles electronic music. Maybe it’s the production: an array of very known, almost rote, euro-dance beatsmiths (from David Guetta to Boys Noize to Benny Benassi) pave the album with synths. But it’s probably all Kelis: her trademarked ...

Sugar & Gold – Get Wet! (Review)

Sugar & Gold

Get Wet!

Released by Antenna Farm Records

It doesn’t take too long of a listen to Sugar & Gold before it becomes apparent that this bold and plucky electro quintet is definitely not aiming to be categorized. And that’s okay, because after producing for acts like the roguish Gravy Train!!!! of the underground indie-dance scene and hitting the road with the eclectically ornate Of Montreal, one could only expect the consequential product to be far from conservative; Get Wet! meets such an expectation and it does so with idiosyncratic style.

Kelis – “Acapella” (Video)

“Before you, my whole life was acapella / Now our symphony’s the only song to sing.” I read an interview with Kelis on VIBE.com a minute ago where she spoke about this song, her new album, and where she currently was in life. Kelis’ upcoming album, due out this June, is set to be an uptempo compilation of pulsating grooves and eccentric positive vibes – not quite what you’d expect after her divorce from Nas, right? But Kelis said to VIBE some months back:

“I think [fans are] expecting an angry record. And I’m not angry. I’m actually curious to see how this goes over. …

Another addition to UMF 12 is artist/composer Christopher Janney’s installation Sonic Forest which provides an interactive, aural and visual component that will entice festival goers into a unique environment. Triggered by both public interaction and electronic instruments, Sonic Forrest is composed of 16 eight-foot tall aluminum poles that contain audio speakers, lights and photo-electric cells. As people move closely by these “electronic trees,” they trigger both melodic and environmental sounds, in a sense playing the forest.” When no one is moving in the space, the piece generates a seriesof preprogrammed patterns. During various parts of the installation, independentdrummers join the environment, turning the Forest into a dance festival unto itself. Overthe past five years, Sonic Forest has been featured at Bonnaroo, All Points West andCoachella in the US, as well as the Download Festival, Hyde Park Calling, Wireless andGlastonbury Festivals in the U.K., the Lowlands Festival in the Netherlands and the Zaraga World’s Fair in Zaragoza, Spain.

Tickets for the world’s leading two-day electronic and alternative music experience are available now exclusively through http://www.ultramusicfestival.com.
