In 1980 when Karl Hyde and Rick Smith first got together in Cardiff, England, MP3s, iPods, even MTV didn’t exist, and Apple computer was in the middle of a lawsuit with the Beatles’ Apple record label. The experimental electronic band by Hyde and Smith was formed but undefined; the name was represented by an abstract squiggle and pronounced “Freur.” By the time “Born Slippy” appeared on the Trainspotting soundtrack and DJ Darren Emerson joined and left, Underworld had burned through several genres, line-ups, and personal dramas, marking their evolution with Underworld MK1-3 sub-brands. Beautiful Burnout ArtJam: The Art of Underworld
For those who don’t know, “Beautiful Burnout” is an astonishing track from Underworld’s 2007 album Oblivion with Bells. It is also the title of the multi-media exhibition on view at Jacobson Howard Gallery during the All Points West Music and Arts Festival running from Aug 1 to 15.
The New York Art Jam will produce an intoxicating confluence of graceful macro-photography, compelling videos and film, lush and mesmerizing sound, layered collages of street snapshots and a poetic diary of painting, images and text. Underworld will be playing live at the All Points West Music and Arts Festival on Aug 8.
