People taking the initiative is always welcome in a time where being bland leads to being cool. So, when someone puts out a product on a culture that’s in a creative limbo, we get to see its ups, downs, and all-arounds. With The Electro Wars, director and creatvor Stephen Vasquez wanted to capture the essence that is electro culture–from the skimpy skirts to the tightest jeans and the most distorted sounds humanly possible to manipulate. With an upcoming screening during the 2010 Winter Music Conference in Miami, Stephen took time to elaborate on his film and his origins of being a electro “warrior.”

Black Man's Cry: The Inspiration of Fela Kuti
Last Saturday I was lucky enough to attend Breakbot’s “Baby I’m Yours” release party, presented by WADKLUB and Ed Banger Records, at Paris’s 1979 Restaurant/Lounge. Thibault Berland, Ed Banger’s newest edition to l’equipe, truly deserved the bangin’ party that was thrown in honor of his debut EP under the label. Breakbot is paving the way for a new definition of electro-pop, using smooth tunes, retro vocals, catchy beats, and mixing them together to create a truly original sound. Breakbot stood in the DJ booth with his usual air of shyness, bopping along timidly to his perfectly crafted mixes and structured transitions while the rest of the crowd and the other supportive artists of the French powerhouse label went crazy for his set. He played newbies, “Baby I’m Yours” and “Make You Mine” as well as some old crowd pleasers – …

The world of electronic music shifts accordingly to scenes, trends and fads at any given moment. Most of these have a shelf life that withers away within 12-18 months with a re-invention of the prior music scene taking bits and pieces and shining them up into something new and receptive. The world of French/filter house’s decline in the early 2000s gave rise to the formation of the now-famed Ed Banger Records, run by former Daft Punk manager Pedro “Busy P” Winter. Focusing on releasing music that had a slight feel of the past as a well a loud vision of the future, Busy P began work by signing artists such as Sebastian, Kavinsky, DJ Mehdi and the now-golden boys that are Justice. With seven years of music, touring and support from all over the world, Ed Banger landed in New York City to celebrate its seventh anniversary to a packed house at Terminal 5. What ensued is what many patrons accepted as a rowdy good time with distorted bass, an almost rock-show atmosphere and lots of screaming fans; however, for people rooted in the electronic world, they might have expected something entirely and radically different. …MORE
Here’s the first rave-inducing track from Felix Cartal’s debut record, Popular Music, due out on the 23rd via Dim Mak. With its punchy beats, tantalizing vocals, and murky instrumentation, the track is wonderfully addictive. But then again, Cartal must know how to make a banger after having remixed the likes of MSTRKRFT and pop stars like Brit Brit, as well as opening for Justice and Busy P. This time around, he opened his Rolodex and invited Johnny Whitney (The Blood Brothers, Jaguar Love), Todd Fink (The Faint) and Austrian newcomers Beta Bow. We’re expecting nothing short of earth-shattering (no pressure). Tour dates after the jump.
