We've always looked forward to James Lavelle's output, be it his MoWax catalog, his DJing, or his UNKLE project, which is back on again with “War Stories”. Michael Vazquez caught up with him for drinks and video on the Lower East Side Monday 06/04/07.

Rain Rain Go Away

Released by CraftyPlugz

With timely conceptual gems like his disses toward Rosie O'Donnell and Hot 97 for their controversial comments about Asian people already under his belt, battle rapper-turned-Ruff Ryder-turned MySpace MC Jin pulls heartstrings with 'Rain Rain Go Away,' his ode to the victims of Apr's Virginia Tech massacre. Over a backdrop that's just as reflective as it is uplifting, Jin lets the victims know that they'll be remembered, and touches on issues of religion. While Jin doesn't break any ground lyrically, it's still refreshing to see a sincere MC that ...

Beatport and Native Instruments get frisky

They were showing it off at NAMM a few months back, but it's now official that NI's new Traktor Scratch DJ software will come with online dance music retailer Beatport fully intergrated into the program. That means if you're playing out somewhere with a wi-fi connection and you suddenly realize you're lacking a track, it can be downloaded from Beatport directly into the Traktor software.

Interestingly, Traktor Scratch also marks NI's first independent foray into digital/analog DJing without previous partner, Stanton's Final Scratch. To sweeten the deal, NI is offering a “crossgrade” discount which will allow owners of Final Scratch, Serrato SCratch or Traktor 2 or 3 to purchase Traktor Scratch at a significant discount until the end of May.

Last Tuesday saw the boys sell out Bowery Ballroom before DJing two days later at Hiro Ballroom. URB caught the final show of the whirlwind week–a Saturday night live set at a packed Studio B in Brooklyn–but was sadly only able to get the shot above. (You can call it distant and out-of-focus, but we think the “nu-rave photography” shot nicely complements the group.) The band played the 45-minute set virtually nonstop, adapting to the club mentality in contrast to the “concert” feel of the Bowery show. We gotta continue co-signing on these guys. You …

Yes, the DJ is supposed to be flailing his arms like that, he’s Wiijing

Modesto's DJ ! hooked up his computer and a pair of Nintendo Wii controllers via bluetooth and now he can do all his mixing while dancing and waving his arms in front of his computer instead of hunched over the machine pushing buttons and clicking a mouse.

He's calling the new art form DJ Wiij and is excited about the possibilities available in wireless DJing. The technology actually works pretty well even if he hasn't figured out a good way to work in the motion capture of the Wii itself. He's figured out how to map all the control buttons to functions in Traktor and is well on his way to inventing all sorts of names for the things he's figured out how to do. Check out his Web site or watch …
