URB #155: The Power Issue preview

What’s power anyway? The story of blogger turned media-king or -queen is older than last week’s blog cycle, which we all know is ancient history. Can power be found in the emergence of a face from behind dance music’s most beloved robots? Can power be found in accepting a multi-million dollar 360-deal with a multi-billion dollar corporation? Can power be found in giving it to those without?

URB #155: The Power Issue explores the various definitions of power within the escalatingly closer worlds of independent and “mainstream” music and culture. From booking agent Tom Windish to executive producer of Charlie Rose, from NahRight’s Eskay to a first look at MySpace Music’s relaunch, the power to create and distribute information and art is changing by the minute.

PepsiCo has gone artsy. For the first time in U.S. history a soda will be offered in Aluminum bottles that come in 12 unique designs. Now, drinkers can get all jacked up on Mountain Dew while gripping art. The bottle line is called Green Label Art and it will be released between May and Oct of 2007. Artists who took to the bottle as a canvas include Graff artist Dr. Revolt, tattooist Troy Denning, graphic designer Mark Nardelli, stencil artist Peat Wollaeger, collage-r Adam Juresko, sneaker/clothing specialist Jeffstaple and Hawthorne Heights’ JT Woodruff. Low-rider bicycles, limited editor new-era lids, skateboard decks and hoodies have all been branch projects inspired by the artists’ Green Label Designs.
