Beck Remixes Jamie Lidell “Completely Exposed” (MP3)

Many moons ago, URB was treated to a late-night private drunken live performance of some new vocal-driven tunes that IDM boffin Jamie Lidell was working on in Christian Vogel’s Barcelona practice space. It was rambunctious to say the least, and sadly, we long ago lost our video clips from that exceptionally wild night. But several months later, when Lidell’s Multiply album dropped, we were shocked at how the spastic beats and vocal freakouts had been harnessed into the stunningly creative techno-soul tunes that have been Lidell’s calling card ever since.

Years later, Lidell is still riding that blue-eyed wave with 2010’s Compass album. And now he’s scoring what we’re pretty sure is Beck’s first ever remix. The version of “Completely Exposed” is brief, and the drums are heavy. And it makes us wonder what ever happened to the …

Mattie Safer (Ex-Rapture) :: “Is That Your Girl” (Live) (Video)

Whe we heard last year that Mattie Safer, bassist/singer for dance-punk veterans The Rapture was leaving the group, we suspected he’d basically gone night clubbin’ and never came back. This clip, shot last month in NYC, pretty much proves our suspicions. The audio quality isn’t great, but you can clearly glean the raw jukin’ Jamie Lidell-meets-Green Velvet vibe happening here. There comes a time in seemingly every electronic musicproducers life when the crossover appeal of song-based “pop” comes calling, and all those years behind the turntables and laptop suddenly make stepping up to the mic a reasonable proposition. Jamie Lidell “The Ring” (Black Cab Sessions) (Video)

The coolest thing about Jamie Lidell’s edition of the long-running Black Cab Sessions is that he’s using a Pigface amp—which are these rad little battery powered guitar amps that everyone one of my friends seemed to have in highschool. Slightly less rad is the close-ups of Lidell mouthing the microphone. Dude can sample-loop-harmonize with himself like nobody’s business. We just hope some one wiped down the mic when he was done.
