Made Event’s monster festival on roids, Electric Zoo is back with an extra day and a massive lineup. While last year’s event was fantastic, this year’s lineup looks to overtake the previous incarnation by pouring out a ton of proper acts; sure there will be “stars” like Tiësto, David Guetta and Armin van Buuren, but there will also be our favorites on other, smaller stages. No, they’re not on the Billboard charts or playing stadium tours, but we love them and think they’re DAMN GOOD. With that said, here’s our recommendations on who to check out at the festival.
It’s interesting that Montreal’s Mutek festival first took place one week after the first Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2000. And for a dozen years, these two sister events have dominated the North American electronic music calendar, with loyal techno tourists traveling from one to the next in an annual pilgrimage down the 401 (the Route 66 of Canada). Richie Hawtin has spent much of the past year touring the globe as his newly revived Plastikman guise, hitting five of the seven continents with his legendary minimal techno. But with the exception of Coachella and Movement 2010, North American fans have had to patiently wait for their turn to experience the interactive visual and audio experiment that defines this ’90s achetype in the new Millenium. Now there’s another chance, as Montreal’s Mutek Festival has announced that Hawtin will headline the event as Plastikman, along with performers Modeselektor, Amon Tobin, Four Tet and James Holden. …MORE
