James Blake’s previous releases have been nothing to scoff at, but his vocals, while well-matched to his production style, have always felt a bit anemic. Which makes this remix of D’Angelo’s “Left & Right” off of Voodoo exactly what the Blake doubters have been looking for. It should come as no surprise that the newly-rejuvenated soul singer’s voice plays wonders across Blake’s mutant ambient dubstep sounds. Maybe D’A should consider JB to work on the new album allegedly coming soon.
James Blake could easily ride the whole post-dubstep troubadour thing for another 18 months before it wears thin, but the multi-faceted producer has decided to give his voice a rest on this new track, “Curbside,” from his upcoming What Happened Here EP. The tune is a wonky beat number, which departs from Blake’s usually cloudy production. It also features a fairly prominent sample taken from Madlib’s (as Quasimoto) “Return of the Loop Digga,” which was itself sampled from Tyrone Washington’s “Submission.”
On Tuesday, Radiohead celebrated the release of their TKOL RMX 1234567 album with an event in London that featured DJ sets by TKOL remixers Jamie XX, Caribou, Lone and Illum Sphere. The evening started off with a brief set by Thom Yorke, who has been spending plenty of time behind the decks lately—including a surprise set at Low End Theory last spring. You can download Yorke’s set, which featured tracks from Headhunter, Madvillian, Aphex Twin and Ramadanman, and watch the singer play records on The Boiler Room website.
Next up for Yorke is a mix he did for the BBC’s 6Mix, which will air on Sunday, Oct. 17th. The show features Yorke playing and discussing some of his favorite current records, including Zomby, Low, Emika and James Blake. He also plays a few Radiohead remixes that didn’t make it onto the TKOL RMX 1234567 record. Check out the tiny teaser for the show.
When hip-hop mainstays The Roots became the house band for Jimmy Fallon’s late night TV show in 2009, it was a safe bet that the bands recorded output would slow down. But that assumption was proven false when the group released 2010’s How I Got Over, and quickly followed it up with Wake Up!, a collection of classic soul covers recorded with John Legend that same year.
