If you had any doubt left in you that 2012 broke fringe electronic instrumentation through to the mainstream then all you had to do was be present at last night’s Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs show at LA’s Fonda Theater last night. Marked, in no small amount, by the fact that he was preceded by DJ’s as opening acts, the TEED one man effort chugged through a set that had all eyes on the stage and all ears at involuntary auditory surrender. The light show was brilliant, and his stage outfit inexplicably quizzical, but its Orlando Higginbottom‘s natural talent for understanding drums and percussion that made it so irresistible to dance, jump, and lose your inhibitions enough to notice you might be falling in love with that cute person next to …
Not too much of a change, although it definitely sounds crisper and knocks harder than the demo version that dropped in April. Besides, any excuse to give this guy more shine is validated. Jai just recently inked a deal with XL Recordings, joining the likes of The Cool Kids, Dizzee Rascal, Giggs, etc. Little birdies in my ear are telling me that we will be hearing a lot more from this fellow in the near future. I for one am psyched. If this young Englishman can pull an album or EP that sounds as good as this out from underneath that bizarre super-mullet of his, it’ll have “instant classic” written all over it.
Holy shit. Talk about electro-soul. This one goes in! Looks like Jai Paul is shaping up to be the UK version of D’Angelo — albeit with a distinct international electronic flair. Spotted at Fader.
