With a little help from our event curation friends at Mixologi, today’s Friday Fresh column is not just a tribute Donald Byrd but also a lesson on the musical visionary’s skill for ‘bridging the gap between jazz, funk, soul and hip hop over several generations.’  The fact that it was curated and mixed by URB veteran and OM Records mainstay J Boogie makes this an even fresher choice for this week’s mix.

Sampled the world over by artists such as Black Moon, J Dilla, Gangstarr, Pharcyde, Madlib, and more, Donald Byrd left a lasting legacy that spanned years and multiple genre shifts that led to his work becoming one of the true ‘building blocks of hip hop.’  The mix itself is simply dope — there’s something here …

Rojai & E. Live – Anything Is Possible (Video)

San Francisco’s own Rojai & E. Live released their album “Hard Pressed” yesterday. The album is an ode to the classic soul and funk sound that doesn’t sound contrived or out-dated. Rojai is also the lead singer of SF’s funk outfit, Bayonics, who pack live performances throughout the city and the entire Bay Area.

Today, enjoy their official music video for the song “Anything Is Possible.” For anyone living in the Bay Area, Rojai & E. Live’s album release party will take place on March 7th at Monarch, also featuring a DJ set from J Boogie and Starship Connection featuring Teeko and B. Bravo.
