Pigeon John and His Band of Merry Men

A hip-hop show centered around self-deprecation and bi-curious moments is, in itself, a curious moment. Pigeon John used to get booed when he first started performing at the always democratic, always critical events hosted at the venerable Good Life and I don’t say this to disparage his reputation—that’d be stealing from PJ’s own shtick—but because the dude persevered. He got back onto the stage and eventually won a few people over. Last night at Safari Sam’s—on an interesting wave of LA public radio station/NPR affiliate KCRW love—he had hands in the air and his hooks on their lips without an ounce of the lyrical bravado that has defined the very set he came up in.
