“Remiix” Richie Hawtin’s Minus Label On Your iPhone

Since his early days manipulting records on three turntables with an arsenal of foot pedals to his Decks, EFX & 909 heyday and the salient Closer to the Edit deconstruction of techno, Richie Hawtin has always been searching for a new alchemy with which to transform the traditional techno track into something more.

While the world was preparing for Christmas 2011, Hawtin’s new mobile app publisher Liine unveiled Remiix, an app for iPhone that let’s you “combine, transform and re-arrange” tracks released on his revered Minus label. Download the app for $2.99 on iTunes, and start having your way with cuts by Marc Houle, Matador and Magda (plus a few that don’t start with the letter M).

2ManyDJs :: Celestial Voyage Mix (MP3)

2ManyDJs have unveiled the second mix from their new Radio Soulwax website and iPhone app, following the head-scratching Introversy mix, which mashed-up just the intros from dozens of favorite tunes. The latest mix, Celestial Voyage, takes a more spacey approach, with a boatload of galactic-flavored funk and dance tunes played out to equally intergallactic visuals.

You can check out the 60 minute mix and accompanying video on the Clash Music website. We wouldn’t personally recommend the use of mind-altering substances to enhance enjoyment. So we’ll leave that to one-half of 2ManyDJs, David Dewaele. “Some of my friends who smoke weed – because I don’t do that – they say that watching it in a darkened room, all by yourself, smoking weed is the biggest trip you can ever have.” …MORE

Richie Hawtin Introduces Liine iPad/iPhone Remix Project

Richie Hawtin has always been one to turn things up past 11. Whether it’s the sound level at one of his legendary parties, or the stark minimalism of his Plastikman project, dude don’t half step. So while plenty of artists have released fun little doo-dads for iPhone and iPad to promote their music, the Berlin-via-Detroit/Windsor producer has gone all in with the new Liine series of Apps. The premise is easy, collect a bunch of loops and pieces that make up current and archival tracks from Hawtin and friends. Offer up a smart remix platform, complete with custom effects to further define each individual artists, then let the gets go crazy on the touchscreen. …MORE

DJ Shadow Live 10/31/10 @ HOB Sunset (Review)

Endtroducing...on Halloween

This Halloween I didn’t go trick or treating nor did I costume up, I didn’t even give candy to children—instead, I went to check out one of my favorite DJ’s, the legendary DJ Shadow at the House of Blues on Sunset.  Always skeptical when seeing DJs perform live as their ‘stage performance’ is never truly eventful, I embarked into this show with high hopes of creativity, originality, and entertainment. To my surprise (not really), Shadow delivered on all fronts with his inventive Shadowsphere apparatus and outstanding and thought-provoking visual accompaniment courtesy of longtime VJ collaborator, Ben Stokes.  DJ Shadow, who introduced himself by walking out on stage waving to his fans following an energetic and headnodding performance by Quannum homie Pigeon John (pictures …

Artificial Sweetness: Augmented Reality Is Coming To an IRL Near You (Video)

Madison Avenue has unleashed an onslaught of Augmented Reality products and services, notably Virtual Sean and Virtual Mirror. As with any new technology, it all comes down to execution, and so far almost all of my experiences have felt gimmicky. There are, however, some notable exceptions on which I’m keeping my eye: video gaming and mobile devices. Nintendo’s Wii console proved to consumers that gaming can be experienced with natural gestures, escaping the shackles of traditional handheld controllers once and for all. Now, Sony’s Playstation Move and Microsoft’s Project Natal push the experience even farther with camera and motion-based systems that mimic a user’s every move. Stunning the game industry at the 2009 E3 conference, Microsoft’s Project Natal was demonstrated through games in which the user can interact with his environment using nothing more than natural body gestures. It uses an infrared sensor attached to the Xbox 360 console to track 48 skeletal points on a human body. This level of detail not only allows for tracking arm and leg motions, but even individual fingers and facial expressions, prospectively bringing to an end the era of stiff mugs that are part and parcel to ordinary gaming.
