Nickelus F & Portishead R.A.R.E. (Mixtape)

R.A.R.E. (Reliving A Real Experience) is the latest and most introspective project from Richmond, VA artist Nickelus F. It’s a passion project that delves into Nick’s thoughts about his career, life & music.

Nickelus F gives new life to Portishead’s classic material on this project without taking away from the original mean and sound of Portishead’s production and lyrics.

R.A.R.E. (Reliving A Real Experience) is also a lead into more original work with Portishead that will surface in Fall/Winter 2009. Nickelus F & his band Silverust are working on music with Portishead front man Geoff Borrow that will be released in the UK and of course can be found online.[onsmash]

MIXTAPE: Micah James – Agoraphobia

Micah James is a name you’re going to be hearing a lot of in 2009, not the least because he’s one of our favorite LA rappers, and hooked up solid with the 87 Stick Up Kids posse.

Conceived and created in a small room in the Golden State, ‘agoraphobia’ has Micah James painting words into rich sceneries both verdant and gray. Don Cannon, DJ Drama introduce Asher Roth

Already signed to an offshoot of Loud and dropping his first mixtape today with help from Don Cannon and DJ Drama, 21-year-old Asher Roth is staking out a claim as an MC to watch. The suburban-Philly rapper brings a laid back flexible rhyme style that has Drama calling him “The White Jay-Z.”

The mixtape finds Asher appropriating beats previously rocked by Common, Kanye, The Cool Kids and Andre 3000, plus introspective single “The Lounge” and a guest spot from John Mayer of all people. Asher’s style and skin color will doubtless earn quite a few Eminem comparisons, but that aside, this mixtape definitely shows his debut will be something to watch for.

Check it out for yourself here.

More strangeness promised from of Montreal

With twin penchants for pairing painfully introspective lyrics with undeniably catchy pop sounds and bizarre stage pageantry, there’s certainly nothing normal about Kevin Barnes or his band of Montreal, but that’s precisely why their 2007 album Hissing Fauna Are You the Destroyer? was one of that year’s best. Judging by Barnes’ latest post to his band’s MySpace blog, they’ve got even more oddities of a personal nature in store on their next LP, Skeletal Lamping, out in Oct.

Saying he was compelled to make this album, and that it’s all about the unpredictable, yet hummable, Barnes claims to be bored with things that “work” so apparently the next album wont. But heck, I can’t explain it half as well or confusingly as Barnes so read on:

I’ve finished the new album. i’ve been working on it for …
