Here at URB HQ, if there’s one thing we know about, it’s Coachella. Having the ultimate music festival in our own backyard means we’ve had a front row seat to watch it grow from an ambitious gathering in the desert to a record-breaking sellout destination for music fans worldwide. People even still ask who’s playing the “URB Tent” this year, which is funny since there hasn’t been one of those since the early ’00s. But if there was an URB stage at Coachella 2011, here’s some of the acts we’d want to claim as our own. …MORE
It’s been six years since Beans hit us with the double barrel of albums Tomorrow Right Now (2003) and Shock City Maverick (2004). Now the member of Antipop Consortium is back in the solo saddle with End It All due out in February. The album features guest vocals by Tunde Adebimpe of TV on the Radio, as well as production from Four Tet, Clark, Tobacco, Nobody, Son Lux, Interpol‘s Sam Fogarino, and Bumps (the drum section from Tortoise). No word on if Beans is still jocking the porn and anal sex lyrical steez, but with his mile a minute flow, it’s hard to tell anyways. …MORE
Interpol
Interpol
Released by Matador
The ever-present longing of Paul Banks’ unmistakable baritone hits all the right notes on Interpol’s self-titled fourth album. His gothic wails dissect with precision on top of reverbed guitars, stellar drums, layered piano and synths. The moody atmospherics of Interpol were recorded prior to Carlos D leaving the band and his signature bass lines, which remain among the most intriguing in modern rock, are among the record’s many high points.
Interpol stands apart from the band’s previous releases by way of sonic experimentation while maintaining the brilliant melody and verve that has garnered them such a fervent following over the past decade. Those disappointed with the stylistic departure of 2007’s Our Love To Admire will be pleased with the direction taken on the new record thanks in part to the wizardry of mixer Alan Moulder. Piano-laced tracks like “Memory Serves” and “Summer Well” contain a fullness of sound worthy of both introspection and radio play.
