Nothing official on this yet, but with the 10 year anniversary of the minefield rap classic Funcrusher Plus on the near horizon and anonymous confirmation from reliable sources, Company Flow is reuniting. Co-Flow MC and current Mush Records artist Bigg Jus has been telling a few heads around LA that “they're working together on something.” Some of something might include deluxe packaging—and new material—for the reissue of Funcrusher and a DVD release of the group's last performance together, about six years ago. All three dudes—El-P, Jus and Mr. Len—have projects for the first part of the double-oh-seven, so we're sure to hear awkward denials or pieces of confirmation from the trio in the coming months. DJ Darren Revell selects the top 10 shoegaze, dreampop, trip-hop songs of all time from his Big Sonic Heaven radio program.
From 1995 to 2003, DJ Darren Revell took Detroit listeners on a narcotic-like trip each Sunday night with his “Big Sonic Heaven” radio show. Specializing in “ethereal dream-pop, shoegaze, synth-pop, deep alternative,” the show provided a rare place on commercial airwaves for legends such as My Bloody Valentine and Portishead as well as local bands Majesty Crush and Glider. Today, Revell has revived “Big Sonic Heaven” on Los Angeles’ Indie 103.1, where it airs Monday through Thursday from 10 PM to midnight. Mixing classic cuts with choice nu-gazer sounds, “Big Sonic Heaven” remain a wonderful broadcast anomaly in a broadband world.
Maybe it’s different in the States, but over here in the UK we’re drowning under a torrent of top-ten polls telling us who the hot new indie bands of 2007 will be. A few token soul singers and pop acts are being mentioned too, but definitely no hip-hoppers or DJs. Finding the new Arctic Monkeys, that’s all anyone really seems to care about right now.
No one hates an internet leak more than an indie rapper. Lupe Fiasco through a damn fit when Food and Liquor sneaked out, and the new El-P promo went so far as to digitally insert the name of the editor it was sent to right where everyone can hear it (nothing like a little shame to keep you right). So why is Talib Kweli making the album he just finished with Madlib, Liberation, avilable as a free ZIP file? Who cares?! It's free Talib.
